The difference is not using the virtual memory as much. And as you found out it does help.
With 384MB ram I still set my virtual for a minimum of 150MB and let windows set the max.
Now to help matters along I also use Powerful PC
Between the two, I have changed a 28 minute graphic rendering from 28 minutes to 1 minute 30 seconds. And I like that idea real well.

Train, if I go into:
My Computer>Properties>Performance tab>Virtual Memory> windows is managing virtual settings right now. If I tick the "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" it reads:
Hard Disk: C:\10449MB Free
Minimum: 0
Maximum: 10449
My questions are, is this where I need to change my settings? And if I set the minimum to 150MB how do I let windows set the maximum? Or do I go into the registry to do the changes?

I must be a newbie, I bought a Compaq!
It turns out the last place I'd find the answer, was in my brain!

You are in the right place

Yes you type in the 150 in the minimum area, but leave the max alone. Make NO changes in the Max area
Or do I go into the registry to do the changes?
Added my comments in the quote area.
Hope this clears things up for you.

Train I thought my instincts were right and yes, you did clear it up except now I have another question. I did the changes, restarted my PC and went back to the virtual settings and noticed that "Windows is managing my virtual memory settings" is ticked and the hard disk>minimum>maximum settings is grayed out. The settings did change as follows:
Hard Disk: C:\10449MB Free
Minimum: 150
Maximum: no maximum
Is this normal? There is also a box to tick to "Disable virtual memory settings" which I have left alone.
p.s. My Systems Resources did increase by 3%!!! I'm going to try the PowerfulPC tip you posted which means I'll probably be a royal pain in the .... but first I better re-read the link cause there is alot to of info to absorb. Thank you Train for your help and patience!

You are welcome to the help and glad to be able to assist you. I reread that a good number of times myself. Also, WhitPhil posted a good explanation of how that stuff works.
Yes you are reading the same informantion as I do and that is normal.
Remember when you started it said 0 in the minimum box. Now your minimum is 150MB, but in system.ini, [386Enh] MinPagingFileSize line it might read a little different.
Mine reads MinPagingFileSize=153600 {which is in K} so that is 156.6MB.
Thought I'd point that out if you see it so you would not panic. Again nothing to worry about.
That disable box, leaving it alone is a very good policy.

Just went into the system.ini, and my [386Enh] MinPagingFileSize reads the same 153600 but wouldn't it be 153.6MB Darn typos...hehehe! Again thank you and hope I can return the favor in the future.

Powerful PC. Forgot about that. I miss reading the VV posts. Will work for XP or does it need to be modified for XP?
