    Cleaning Laptop screens

What should I use to clean laptop screens and monitors. Are the cleaning kits they sell really necessary?, or is alcohol safe to use. Is it different for laptops vs. monitors. Windex on a paper towel? Hand-wipes? What do you guys use?

I use a paper towel with just a little windex on my monitor. Make sure you have it turned off. Or you can try something like this.

I use the windex for electronics wipes 3.99 at the local walmart for what appears to be a lifetime supply.....I clean all my monitors and then head to the tv sets and clean them at the same time so as to not waste any of the cloths

if you want to roll your own, IBM recommends a 50-50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and water with a soft lint-free cloth.

some suggest that paper towels are too rouch and might scratch the screen or gradually wear away any kind of anti-glare/anti-scratch coating on the screen. i use clean cotton rags (like old socks etc).

also, here's a somewhat related tip that's worked well for me with older/marked up LCD screens:

    first, clean the screen thoroughly
then, using a soft cloth and ArmorAll spray (the non-shiny/matte finish formula), apply the spray lightly to the screen (don't use too much or you'll get a smeared buildup) and wipe it evenly over the surface with the cloth.
once it has dried, lightly "buff" the screen with the soft cloth until the haze from the spray vanishes.

this can greatly diminish the appearance of light scratches and scuff marks which tend to accumulate on older LCD screens and it very much improves readablity of the screen. i've seen it work near-miracles on heavily scuffed screens. it also works with older/scuffed handheld screens too.

Read/Right makes a great product for cleaning screens. It comes in a twin pack (1 wet wipe,1 dry wipe) Part # RR1205 or RR1305. I use them at work to clean every notebook that I work on.
