    Operation Delta - 3 - 008

We continue with this new thread. We have been working on trying to install A PCI card into a Compaq 5360. If anyone out has any input on this subject please post.

Sarkazztic is having an interesting time of it also on his equipment.

Nothing dull around here except I may not be moving as fast as "some" would want. I have hard taskmasters here.

These little projects we are on now are as a result of waiting for all of the third Delta computer's components to come in at which time we will start building this computer whose name is BT. And I can't wait since i will be using it.

There is one thing though. I am getting comfortable going into a computer and physically doing something to it. And you learn alot when something doesn't work. I think more so than when it does.

And for you lurkers out there - please don't be afraid to jump in and make a comment or ask a question or whatever.

Tried one last time with the ultra66 in my machine..I tried each pci slot and they all have the same results...splat in device manager and the harddrive using msdos compatability mode....I will try it on tuesday in the new intel board that is coming but all I wanted to use the card for was to add a zip to my personal work machine....I will put the zip in one of my other machines on the network because I am already booked on my ide channels in this machine. I still think there must be an issue with scsi and via I am going to look into this deeper...

    Sarkazztic.

In regard to your card... You've mentioned (questioned) via - scsi issues. Does this board of yours have an onboard scsi controller, or are you just referring to scsi in terms of the pseudo-scsi nature of the Promise card? I can only say I've used Promise cards on many a via chipset boards and have seen no inherent problems.

I'm curious as to why you get errors (wrong file) when trying to flash the Ultra66 bios. Very odd.

    Good Morning All,

Daizy, If you haven't gotten your monitor yet, have you checked on the 17" ones. IE: Fry's had a 17" for $88.00 after rebate. And Daizy when you start regardless of how small a question you have, ask these people. You can see they are chomping at the bit already to aid and assist you in any manner whatsoever. On your computer, on your computer -

Didn't do anymore on the PCI card issue yesterday but will try to get some more info on it tonight for ya'all.

On BT the operating system will be here Tues. I hope. Then a CDROM, Audio Card, Floppy 3.5 disk drive, and monitor and we'll be pretty well ready to start. Oops gotta get the Artic Silver too.

    Heading for work. Later

Yes I was referring to the pseudo scsi nature of the card and the fact that it installs under scsi devices. The problem wit the flash does kind bug me....but I only paid 15 dollars for the card so if it works in the intel board that comes tomorrow its all good and if it doesnt no biggie. I am not going to pursue it any further in my main machine as it is working just the way I want it to, very fast and very stable even overclocked all I can say is I am very very satisfied with the ECS K7vza rev 3 board.... The Athlon is 1.2ghz native and I have pushed it to 1.332ghz with not a single problem I had it running at 36 degrees celcius at idle and around 40-42 under full load then I downloaded cpu idle and now I am down in the low 20s at idle and high 20s at full load. I will be testing cpu idle more extensivly on the new board and my celeron 333 overclocking experiment. Question....the new board can handle celeron cpus from 266mhz to 700mhz and pIII cpus from 500mhz to 933...when I buy the celeron 700 for stage 2 of the testing on this board ($34.00 today on pricewatch.com I may have to buy this next payday if the price falls anymore) can it possibly run faster than 700mhz I have never used one of these multi type processor boards before....ie one that could use one chip to a certain speed then another chip for faster speeds....
Here is a link to the board http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=728LMR
Can I run this board with a celeron 700 at say 750 mhz or faster?

Sarkazztic, I just went back and downloaded to hard copy Operation Delta 5, 6, and 7. Then I scanned the them and I found a lot more "stuff" to think about on the second reading. There are alot of checks to do and one of the things that stands out in my mind is are we doing the steps in the right sequence. Another thing I think I confused DrMDJ a little in my reporting of what was happening on what I was doing.

    DrMDJ, Sorry that happened.

So, for all of you, when we get deep into something like this subject of putting in a PCI card into a propritery system, is there a good standard method of explaining what to do as well as a standard way to report the results that would make it easier for all of us to understand? The only one I can think of is Step 1, Step 2 etc. type of thing.

Well thanks heaps for that DrMDJ
I feel so much more comfortable with that knowledge!

Goose: Thanks for checking out prices for monitors. This one came with a 15" Optiquest...but my old one has a 17" and I'll be swapping them out.

Train: Check your mail please. I got the router you sent me on a wild goose chase (no pun intended greengoose1 ) for.

Bistro: You caught me at a lack of coffee moment...and made me go back and read what the heck I'd posted for specs. I need very little help to look like the idiot I am! But thanks for helping out!

This will be the last I monopolize this thread about my new computer. I don't want the lurkers to get confused. But I do thank you all for your support.

    Daizy, Wild goosechase????

Bistro, While I've been working I've been thinking (no comment please). I found a Ziig ultra ATA 100 card foe $34.00. Now if I bought it to replace the Maxtor Ultra in the Compaq and it did not work,we could assume the Compaq has something in the BIOS prohibiting either one from working.

But if it did work as yours did
    there are two different posibilities.

The Maxtor is either incompatible with the Compaq or the card is bad.

Now Sarkazztic is having the same type of problem. Therefore I think my card is good. I could also verify this by sending it to Train and having him check it in his machine.

I also have the option of installing the Maxtor in BT.

There are many possibilites, but we've gotten into this far enough, I just want the answer to why we have the present issue. I will continue to check out all the procedures presented by everyone but as I asked this morning, Can it be nothing more than a misstep in procedure?

Also I have another harddrive that hasn't been opened which means it has nothing on it.

One more question. What is the difference between the Ziig and the Maxtor so one would work and the other wouldn't?

    'kaz,

IN THEORY you can run your Cel at any speed you like (that it will take...). All this requires is the tools in the bios (or physical jumpers on the board) to set the speed (+ a few things more..). It doesn't matter if it's a multi-type processor board.

But the board you're pointing to seems to be lacking these tools/means. I don't see any jumpers regulating the FSB anywhere and all you seem to be able to set up in the bios is the multipier - and that doesn't really matter since it's locked in the processor.

I have an old Soyo BX board lying around in some box...somewhere..., which in the past has run both Celerons and P3's, both types heavily overclocked. The bios contained about 33 different settings of the FSB, ranging from 60 MHz (God knows why..?) all the way up to 155 MHz. It has been running (slot1) Celerons up to around 95 MHz FSB and P3 650E (100 MHz) up to 137 MHz. The board really didn't care which processor you stuffed into that slot. I've even managed to run a P3 733EB (133 MHz) with the board. You could also adjust the Vcore and a lot of other timing parameters related to CPU and memory.
The reason I retired the board (and keep it as a spare in case of an emergency) is that I cast my MHz-greedy eyes on multiprocessor boards to get more processing power and higher clock rates/multipliers for the newer processors. I fell in love with Abit's VP6 board - it allows you to increment the FSB in steps of 1 MHz all the way up past 170 MHz, has a builtin highpoint raid controller ect. ect - I could keep talking about this board all night....

My point is: If you want to do some heavy duty overclocking, you've got to look out for a board that allows you to control all the differrent settings that make overclocking fun - FBS, Vcore, CAS, ect. This will give you a better chance of successful OCing.
The board you mention doesn't allow you to manipulate these settings very much - if at all.... It may be a good mainstream board if you just want to run your computer "normally". It's certainly not expensive and has a lot of nice features. But for overclocking experiments....no.
