    Operation Delta 3 - 007

Hi All, Operation Delta continues rambling while waiting for the rest of BT's components. Mostly the work has centered around sarkazztic and myself - I should say our computers.

For those of you with Compaqs the last thread is very interesting and can save you money if you lose a harddrive.

Right now we are working towards a workaround for the 32GB barrier. Well better get back to it.

Saved the last thread to disk.

I bet you guys just love the little words they have imprinted on those parts "must use compaq spare"......I found the bomid thing pretty interesting my neighbors compaq is a pressario 2240 pentium 200 mhz had I believe a 3 gig drive in it...we put a 30 gig in it a while back but since he lost the original cds I had him buy a copy windows 95 and we loaded it on there and after a few softpaqs and some other drivers I got it up and running for him....but I did learn that I do not like those machines but I still dislike Hewlett Packards more....I had a couple run ins with there tech support about 2 years ago with a hard drive that failed at the same time the hardware warranty expired and they swore that the little blinking curser in the left hand corner of the monitor was a software problem and my software warranty had already expired....so I kept trying to reinstall from the restore cd thinking if it was software this would fix it.....I left the machine running for 3 days straight trying to uncompress those darn files (this was way before I found out about Vdr) and I got fed up and called them back and said this cannot be software related. I got a somewhat knowledgeable person this time when I demanded a supervisor...we went through the process of trying to get the machine to boot to safe mode and other things and I finally convinced them that the hard drive must have given up the ghost....and he tells me that my hardware warranty had expired 3 days before. I got severely hot...almost like those athlon chips without a heatsink....and griped and griped and hung up and called back and got someone else and just as I was about to put my very convincing wife on the phone they decided that since I originally called in before the warranty had expired (even tho the person I spoke to the first time did not log the call as they are supposed to do) that they would send me out a new drive....not only did they send me a new drive but they tracked the shipping of the drive and called me back that evening and refunded all of my phone in fees and walked me through the hdd install step by step. But I still have these reacurring nightmares about HP computers.....of the 3 machines that you can buy at any circuit city or bestbuy....ie compaq hp or Emachine if I could only buy off the rack I would do the Emachine every day.....but thank god I got inspired and learned how to put my own machines together and in the event that Ole Man Murphy sticks his nose where it doesn't belong and something goes wrong I have all of you here to help me sort out my problems...Thanks again to all of the Delta Crew and of course the Staff at VDR for maintaining this forum for us to learn and also occasionally hop up on our collective soap boxes and rant and rave.....I will return you now to your regularly scheduled program. Now dont even get me started on the Packard Bell that was my first computer...I will leave that for another evening......The parts for my game/science project will be here tuesday I am looking forward to getting that one going....also waiting for more money to come in so I can buy the celeron 700 cpu to stick in it for phase 2 of the project.....phase 1 is a celeron 333 and when the prices drop a little more phase 3 and final I am goign to max the board out with the Pentium 3 933 and then give it to my wife replacing her Slot A athlon 750 when I can find a suitable home for it.

I was way over on the other side of the net when I heard the unmistakable sound of an Emachine being chosen over other off-the-shelf brands.

I'm thinking of hitting mine with the restore disk and start fresh. That hard drive has been through hell and two different computers. Right now it doesn't know if it is an Emachine or my ECS/Duron machine.

    sarrkazztic,

WOW, I haven't seen a post like that since DrMDJ or Jtdoom. Good job.

    Goose,

I didn't realize you ordered the parts for BT from Pluto. Is someone walking them to your house?

    Good Morning All,

DrMDJ, I'm glad someone else is as impatient as I am. I did not order all at one time. Why? Because I took the time to research prices and the companies I wanted to purchase from. I have yet to have anything bad happen except delays and that probably due to tragedey of Sept. 11th. I ordered a chain saw from Sears on or about the middle of August and still haven't gotten it either. Same reason I'm told.

I double checked the tracking numbers and nothing is coming from Pluto. But if you have time, you could.......LOL

Nice writeup Sarkazztic, good detail, looks like our combined efforts of the Delta Crew will benifit those with store bought computers when they have failures. Really this is a whole new area that I have not seen much posted on. Lots to think about here.

Almost missed something you said Sarkazztic. I would like to inform you as perhaps you haven't realized it yet, but you are part of the Delta Crew with all the perks and benifits thereof.

Maxx, What ECS board are you running your duron on? I have the k7vza rev 3 for my athlon I will have to say so far I am pleasantly surprised at the quality for the price. Do any of you use PC-Cillin.....I found it on my motherboard cd last night and installled it on my win98 side of the dual boot...I have norton intenet security on the win2k side but since the 98 is a test in progress I thought I would experiment....I am also using cpu idle and MBM 5.09 on the 98 side and really surprised and kinda skeptical of the results I have seen so far while using cpu idle. last night at full load my athlon only got to 33 degrees celcius and at idle it was in the low to mid 20s I believe I will use both cpu idle and mbm during my Overclocking experiments next week....(I am also slightly OCed on the athlon) 1.2ghz natural running at 1.332ghz very stable on both O.S. even while playing Tiger Woods Golf......I really need to branch out and find another game that I like.....I have Nascar 2000 but driving in a circle is very boring to me.....gotta go to work and make some more money to keep up with this strange illness I have acquired gottabuildanothercomputeritis

All three as propietary as hell and now two of them have merged into one. Announcing the new and improved PACK-PAQ!! Don't even think about upgrading! The case is welded shut (for your safety, of course)!

    sarrkazztic,

I have the K7VMA. I went with this one because it had an AGP slot as well as on-board Savage 4. Right now I am using the on-board, but I will be putting in a "real" card one of these days. Audio is unimportant to me, so I didn't mind the on-board sound.

So far the board has been stable and yes...the price was right. I got the Duron900 with HSF combo.

Now GG1, don't even think about getting me started on MS's Windows Product Activation...
One of these days MS is going to join up with Hewlitt/Compaq. Boot up the computer and get a blue screen that says "Due to your recent attempts at upgrading your system, please insert $17.50 to start the OS. This will automatically notify the nearest service tech and he will come by your house shortly, unlock your system and remove the fee. Thank you.".
