Power supply questions
As most of you know I just put togther an athlon 1.2 ghz...I have a 300 watt Linksys powersupply.....in the machine I have a cd burner, dvd drive 2 hard drives agp 32 mb video card netgear 10/100 network card 80mm case fan blowing in another 80mm fan blowing out at the rear under the psu and the floppy drive....is my 300 watt supply enough for this. I am not having any troubles with stability but I do notice surges when i do intesive computing but I am assuming that is the variable speed fans kicking in to keep that athlon cool. Just wanted to hear your comments.

Sure your ok! But adding more items may require more power supply! I think its 65 watts for the cpu 5 watts for each hardrive and 10 watts for each cd drive and modem ram motherboard etc makes up about 100 watts so you really only need 200 watts min but you should use 250 watt powersupply! What I will build for durons is 250 watt and for athlons 300 watt minimum! I did build a k6 with a 200 watt power supply and two hard drives and two cd roms. It was able to handle it no problem! The power supply was a friends out of an old 386 25 mghts system! Amazing huh?? The old k6 uses more power than a new duron 750 too! So you shouldn't worry at all! The surges you may be having may be power related to your house and not to your computer. Buy a cheap battery backup and see if it goes away!

Hi sarkazztic, I would say you have more than enough. If I had my info on my old hard drive available I would post you a list. Maybe Train has one. I'll look around. The original Delta threads have several in them. I'm thinking somewhere around OP De 7.

I guess "surges" is an incorrect term....I can hear the cooling fans speed up and slow down is what I really mean to say...I am not having any performance issues...and I upgraded the heatsink and fan just for personal comfort I was well under spec for the 1.2 and am now even 10 degrees cooler than what I was before.....my only concern is now I have 2 80mm cooling fans and am thinking about adding 1 120mm fan and 1 more 80mm fan because my office does get hot in the summer time...altho that is just about over here in oregon.I am considering a little overclocking....do I really need to go faster mmmmm good question.....

Go get an Enermax 351Watt. Also has a 120mm intake fan and the 80mm exhaust fan.
A' bit on the spendy side('bout us$65.00),but what the hey,,better safe than sorry... If your interested, www.plycon.com is where i bought mine and am very happy with it "and" the quick FedEx shipping.
Dunn'o bout you guys in the Eugene area, but we in the Salem area had a' bit of thunder last eve. Very rare when we have to here, but pulled the plug on my 'Puter real quick when i heard the first "boomer"...

Yeah we had a bit of thunder and lightning down here too....I went out and bought the antec sx830 case with the 300 watt psu that is amd certified. I am not a heavy computer user I mostly serf and play a few games. Occasionally I burn a cd but I do not do anything else with the machine while burning...hopefully this psu will suffice for now. Have put alot of extra cash into this new machine that I was not expecting.

Yup,,real easy to do on the "extra" cash thing.
I bought an In Win Q500 full tower for my last build. Came with a good 300Watt psu(Powerman), but i wanted the extra protection and the longer cables(and the main Mobo cable is wrapped) Took me awhile to make the decision, but now i can add all the bells n' whistles i want without worry...
