Can i get away with this?

    Ok, here's what i have: Asus A7V133(with latest Award update,1005C) Athlon 850Mhz chip,384Megs PC133 unbuffered SDRAM,ATI Radeon 64Meg DDR VIVO,SB Live! Value,Supra Max USB modem,IBM DeskStar 40Gig Hdd.

Here's what i want to do: Replace Mobo with a new Asus A7V133(with an older BIOS version that will come with board, obviously )Install an Athlon T-Bird 1.2Gig on this board at install.Install a new SB Live!Value card(same as above)

I'm running the DeskStar on the ATA100 onboard controller at present.(Have the latest Promise update installed now). Have the latest Via 4in1432v drivers installed now.

Running this on Win98 first edition with all the updates.

Question is this: Do you think i can get away with doing this without having to do a wipe and re-install of Windoze? I remember Win98 having a problem recognizing the ATA100 during set-up when recognizing hardware unless you do the install with the Hdd on the standard IDE connector first. Then switch it to ATA100 "after" the OS install. Does this sound like it's do-able with just a part switch? Or, should i not take the chance?

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated..(and,,i hope this makes sense to ya'all )

You could get away with it and rely on Windows to recognize all the new components and make the appropriate adjustments---but you would probably be better off doing a complete reformat/install in order to avoid any future complications/conflicts.

Since its the same MB you shoud be able to get away with the swap. As for the promise controller... The system would normally initially just recognize it as a PCI controller, which would be fine until you got the promise driver installed. But in this case all the drivers are loaded and everything is already set up on the HD you will be using. So, it should pretty much just come up fine. Just keep things simple and put any cards in the same PCI slots on the new board (to preserve IRQ assigments).

Hardy-har har you'ze guys.. Seriously tho'(ya',,right,,), bistro, you may have me pegged,heh-heh,,but, no, i don't "usually" try to make things harder. Just seems to happen that way(uh-huh)..I have such a miserable time getting my ISP's program back up properly after a clean install is one of the reasons. It's MSN dial-up(ya, i know, but i get it for $14.00 a month)when i try to re-install version 5.4, it trys to get me to do the new MSN Explorer thing which is too damn much like AOHell. Also, have such a rotten time trying to save my O.E. mail and addy's.
It would just be so much simpler if i didn't have to do a clean install.
Guess too, i have a concern about the BIOS that comes with the board screwin' up my ATA configs until i can get the latest version installed.
Thanks for your suggestions,,and will someone pleez get Train a glass of cold water? Think he may have hurt his'self ROFLhisA**off..

    Ok,
Let me see if I got this staight?? You want to replace your motherboard with the same motherboard and a older bios revision?? You also want to install a new Sound Blaster Live Value sound card that is the same thing you already have in the system?? I am laughing at this, as it has to be a joke! You have changed nothing except your bios version. And that probably won't affect a single thing.... depending on what changes take place from the old bios version to the new one, which by the way is unknown!! LOL. Heres a idea for you... Have you tried this one yet? Create a ghost image of your drive on another partition. Format c: and then reinstall the ghost image exactly the way it was before.

I can remember digging a fox hole in the army and just as I had it almost all the way dug. The company commander said alright lets fill in those fox holes and get ready to move out! Then a month later they asked me to re-enlist. Are they nuts! Think about it here in this case LOL!

I apologise Bistro. I'm not exactly sure what led me to believe the goal was to keep things simple. What fun is simple? Simple is easy. And easy is boring. I retract my statement/warning. It would be best if cards were randomly placed, perhaps some left out. Now we're talking fun.

NOW you're talkin'!! That'll mess things up sufficiently to make an unnecessary challenge!!

OK guys,,all "foxholes" aside.. Guess i'd better give some semblance of a reason for what i'm doin'?

It's just that i'm going to use the Mobo i have now and the 850 Athlon(it's factory unlocked) in a second machine to overclock a' bit and play around with. I had all i needed except the main board and sound to build this machine. Heck, i have a copy of Mandrake Linux8.1 and might even put the "penguin" on it. Just seemed silly to use the "new" Mobo in the experimental box.

Yu' know? Kinda like drinkin' a' 20 year old Chablis with a' spam sanwich'?

Well,,at least maybe we got some grins out'ta this!?
    See ya'
