My mothers computer has a cdrom drive that will play audio cd's but if you put any program cd in the drive and click my computer and then d drive it will show you the drive volume and capacity and free space of the cdrom but in the files window there is nothing showing up... what can cause this is the cd drive going out??? I had her remove the drive from system properties and reboot and let it reinstall no luck I had her do the system restore in winme no luck...I have no more suggestions other than replace the drive but i wanted to post it here first

    Hi sarrkazztic,

Sounds like the drive is just not reading well enough to read data disks, music disks will work even with read errors, but data won't. You might try using a cleaning disk to clean off the lense before you toss out the drive, or remove the top and blow the dirt out.

    Good Luck,

    DA

the machine was just built in january I doubt there is that much dirt inside of it...I have instructed her to go out and buy a cdrom cleaner .....she smokes heavily but I doubt that is the problem...she could have it teched out for about 70 an hour....I told her to go to computergeeks.com and buy a new cd burner for 57 dollars plus shipping and upgrade and that way we will no if it is the drive or a problem with the windows ME
