To The Weekly Thread Gang - Thoughts

Good Afternoon to all of You contributors and readers of the Weekly Thread. A few comments.

Jaak, Thanks very much for the effort you are making on regaining some of the lost material on Chipsets and Controllers.

The two losses we have sustained are unacceptable. But they are probably not very acceptable to Housen either. I am accepting the challenge to try and come up with a solution.

Bistro, Train, Jaak, DrMDJ, and Kallikru. You are among the main contributors who spend quite a bit of time at this endeaver. I would like you to think about the mechanics of how we post on threads. Is there a problem there?

Do any of the rest of you, members of VirDr have any ideas?

Maybe the sheer volume we are seeing on VirDr is having a toll.

I will Email Housen and see what his thoughts are.

    Goose,

Actually, I think we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg with what has happened to these threads. We had the same problem in the internet forum with the long thread, there. For some reason it won't display any new posts, but will still tally them and move the thread to the top. Also the site outages are becoming more frequent. Fortunately, they don't last long. Then there are the problems we saw with some of Dodge's posts. Finally, I would say that during primetime, the place is just generally slow. So what does all this say? well, I don't think it has anything to do with how we are posting. The length of the threads could be a big part of it, though. Anyway you look at it, the problems aren't restricted to just weekly threads. I believe it is systemic in nature.

    huh, i'm a gangsta now?

I'm using IE5.5 SP1 to get here, and I am on cable in Belgium.
As I mentioned in page two, i've had problems to get here at times
(error 502, which may have been a router thing)
other times posts just don't "take".

I've had times when the page remains blank, and I blame the banners. (I had to lower security settings, and even then it can happen.)
(gut feeling, veeeeery loooooong redirections URL in the cgi scrips)

other thoughts included them, but that Chinese issue stuff is over?

As Maxx noted, things have gotten slower and outages or hiccups are more frequent around vdr. I agree with him in that there are problems and they aren't just isolated to our threads. I don't even think the size/length (of ours) is directly an issue. There have been some pretty massive threads over in the Win98 forum in the not to distant past. One has to believe there's some fundimental problem either with the server(s) or the ubb support code. I really don't see that we (posters) can do much. It would be very difficult to have to carry on discussions worrying about and counting lines, posts, etc. I think there are just some issues that need to be addressed by vdr. And hopefully sooner rather than later (especially when there are no backups or checkpoints of threads).

I do believe the problem has been covered.
I had trouble with QOH's thread and so did she. As you probably have seen. Again about 1 AM my time this morning there were some more clitches. Now the thread is gone Only about 6 post when it started. Vdr has problems!

Good Morning All, Interesting observations. No, maybe we can't fix the problem but we can keep inputing our observations which might help. What do you think about starting a test thread and watch it really close. I want to see this squared away ASAP.

Emailed Housen. Maybe know more when he answers.

I have a thread that got to page 10 and just under 500 posts. I went to post on it today and it basically blew up. It used to be a huge cgi file with all the info for the thread, now this is the cgi file:
    | | | |2| |000001| |Kevin| |04-29-2001| |12:10 PM| |[email protected]| |gong| |my ip| |reg| |1| |Kevin| |00000006| |yes
    Z| |000001| |Kevin| |04-29-2001| |12:10 PM| |[email protected]| |gong| |my ip| |reg| |1| |Kevin| |00000006| |yes http://forums.fishindex.com/ultimate...c&f=4&t=000289 http://forums.fishindex.com/ultimate...4&t=000289&p=1
    .
    .

I had a backup of my board from friday, but I accidently messed up the cgi file. Although, I do have all of the cache files with all the information of the post.

    1. Why did this happen?
    2. Is there a way to build the cgi from all the cache files that I have. I backed up my board on friday, so I have all those files.
    3. Why is the thread no longer on the forum list?
    4. Any ideas?

    1) Too many posts in a thread that the server could not handle
    2) Nope.

    3) As it is corrupt, the UBB no longer detects it as a proper thread, and therefore will not show it.

    4) See above.

So it sounds like there isn't much you can do other then keep the posts much lower. Why not always split them at 50.

Hi Troy, Thanks for your input. Probably a good idea to split at a lower number of posts. I think in the Operation Delta Threads we dropped from 4 to 3 pages and we've thought about going to two pages after the last couple of problems in the Weekly Subject threads.

One other thing we could do is have 2 or 3 people back up each day, but this also has a potential problem as you would have a number of hours between backups. The only other thing we could on this is for each contributor to save his posts to MSWord. This would not take to long either.

    Hi "gans"lings

I suppose we still have a very slim chance of getting material from page one when one of the guys on vacation looks in internet history, and pastes the content of what is found to me or GG1...
or clean it up and post it in page one.
(like I did with the material I could recover from page two)

    GG1, Bistro,
didn't you print all of this?
a scanner with OCR could do wonders...

in present conditions, it we start off where the resurrected material left us, we have a huge gap about controllers.

we discussed pros and cons on RAID on board.
or rather, whether or not to use RAID when the capability is on board, as having 4 ports can be a godsend.
And we had some pros and cons about SCSI too.

someone mentioned the new Nvidia chipset
there was some nice imput on chipsets too.

major parts about controllers is still lost.
    DrMDJ about controllers
me about scsi and agreeing about the dangers in RAID and SCSI not being "the thing to have" for Joe Consumer.
(dammit, we had some nice interaction with many people going in these posts)

as people concluded near the end of page two, there is still a lot of ground one can cover on the capabilities of motherboards.

some suggestions in page tree were to (please) not get too technical

(which I interpret like we don't want to go into deep details.)
    Hehehee, I couldn't even if I tried.
    - - - -

I asked GG1 to consider starting a new thread once we are ready to go on with chipsets and controllers, and suggested he use the same title format as the two resurrected titles

this is part of this message to GG1
I know you started an 8B thread
it may be wise to leave it as a place to bang heads together...
but the way it is now, we are seriously disrupted.

why not start a new one with same title as the resurrection (I have made then both anew with matching title)
    and start from there.??

WEEKLY SUBJECT 08, chipsets and controllers, continued from page TWO

hell, I dunno, I am not gonna start the new topic title, cuz this is your baby.

Hi Jaak, Have been looking into OCR a bit. Train was talking about it but I can't remember if he can do that or not.

With chipsets and controllers so much an intregel part of a motherboard, we need to redo it somehow.

with a bit of decent scanner, and a halfway decent OCR program (as supplied with scanner), you can already do wonders.
