    Modem connect display showing 115,200 (help)

    My neighbor replaced his modem (lightning) and now his toolbar display shows connecting at 115,200. I know this is incorrect and in properties/ max speed but how can he get his display to return to the 48000 usual connect speed to display? IBM computer with 56k V90 modem. Thanks for any help.

    Mine has been showing that for quite a while now, and hasn't caused any problems. It never occurred to me to try to change it
    Sorry, but I don't have an answer other than if it ain't broke, don't fix it. It makes me FEEL like I am connecting faster

    i have your answer go to your connection settings and look for the tab that says maximum connect rate or something of that nature set it for 56k and it should then display the connection rate around 46,000 to 56,000 good luck ,

    inferno207: I appreciate the help but this connection setting sets the rate for "modem to computer"
    not modem to modem (ISP). I need the toolbar display to show the actual connect rate from modem to ISP.
    seracca: in effect it "IS" broke. Since 53Kbps is the fastest connect rate for a dial up modem, 115,200 would be incorrect.

    If you will search in the w98 fourm there are several past discussions. It depends on the modem, but some can have a change added.

    Opovet, thanks for the link. Looks like a helpful link was within. Thought about the 98 forum but considered this a hardware problem and didn't want to get one of those "wrong forum" notices

    You need to add a character string to advanced properties of your modem. You should be able to get it from your isp tech support via the web or a phone call.

    I was given several of these character strings to attempt to solve a disconnect issue and one of them showed me connecting at 115. I went through a couple and found one that works correct and shows what appears to be a true connection. Mostly 49,3.

    Thanks medic. Your suggestion will give us a chance to test the knowledge of our ISP tech support team. (small outfit)
    If not fixed by Monday will give them a call. Thanks for the tip.

    this is a common problem. windows is showing the port speed instead of the connection speed. its not a hardware problem, its a software problem that usually occurs when incorrect for faulty drivers are loaded for the modem.

    remove both modems from the device manager (you might have to do it in safe mode) or from the modem applet in the control panel. reboot and let windows detect the 'new' modem. it should ask you for drivers; supply them. if you didnt receive a driver disk/diskette you may have to download drivers from the manufacturers website.
