overclocking situation
I just got my hands on an old gateway 2000 that has the i430 tx mobo in it specifically the oaaes version that came with a p166 processor I read on gateways site that it could be upgraded to a 233 and checked what the jumper settings were for the 233 I changed the jumpers to match the 233 left the 166 cpu in it and added a large heat sink and fan...rebooted its working like a charm so far (I am typing this post on it) Is it supposed to be that easy? I went to pcpitstop.com and let it do some tests and passed all except video memory and conventional memory as I am using the on board video that is only 2 megs and only have 32 mb of sdram in it for testing purposes but it is doing everything fine for now.....I do have one more question....I have a celeron 366 processor that I want to put in a board and overclock for personal use...does the board have to meet 366 as a minimum to use this chip or can I get say a 500-700 mhz mobo what are your suggestions....

i read somewhere that the board should support the mega hertz you are trying o overclock too .such as this .a board supports 500 mghz and you have a 400 chip you can safley overclock up o 500 ..get it?

Remember that back in the days when those processors were out, tolerances were different.
Common to do such overclocking.
Test it with a utility such as CPU BurnIn to check.

You should consider yourself lucky if you are getting that 166 to run stable at 233. Most have not had such success (200 or slightly more is more the norm). Now that's of this is the "classic" pentium. If what you have is the MMX version then you are right in line with what others have seen/gotten. This/that one can be pushed to 266. What frequency, multiplier and voltage settings are you using (just out of curiosity).
For the celeron, get a board that supports its current speed by default. Such a board should also offer the higher speed settings you would want. The 366 should be pretty overclockable. You should be able to get it in to 550 (stable). However, it is multiplier locked, so all you will be able to do is adjust the frquency/bus speed.

Dr.. I do not know what frequency or multiplier...the bus speed is set at 66mhz..I went to gatways site and looked at the upgrade information for the cpu and had jumper settings for using the 233 I changed them from the settings that were for the 166 it was just moving 2 jumpers 1 position to the right from where they were previously the old settings were 1-2 shorted and 4-5 shorted I moved it to 2-3 short and 5-6 shorted on rebooted...I have left the machine on all night playing a high graphics slot machine game with auto play option and it has worked great...I am leaving it on all day while I am at work and will post back around 6 pm pacific time on the final results
Here is the information from gateways site that I went byProcessor information
These are the jumper settings in your Technical Reference Manual that shipped with your computer. Your motherboard will be configured for only one of these CPU speed settings. It is important that you not change any of these jumpers. The processor that shipped on your motherboard is the only CPU that Gateway supports and tests on your board.
CPU Freq Host Bus Freq. JB1
233 66 1-3, 2-4
200 66 1-3, 4-6
180 60 1-3, 4-6
166 66 3-5, 4-6
150 60 3-5, 4-6
133 66 3-5, 2-4
120 60 3-5, 2-4
90 60 1-3, 2-4
This board can support the MMX Pentium Overdrive designed for the CPU that your computer shipped with from the factory. Gateway has not tested every compatible overdrive on each of our boards. Therefore the only MMX Pentium Overdrives supported and sold, are the ones that match your original CPU speed with no modification to your motherboard.
Gateway supports the following Pentium Overdrive chips for the respective processor speeds:
Shipping CPU speed Overdrive processor supported
166 MHz Pentium Processor 200 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
150 MHz Pentium Processor 180 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
133 MHz Pentium Processor 200 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
120 MHz Pentium Processor 180 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
100 MHz Pentium Processor 200 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
90 MHz Pentium Processor 180 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive
75 MHz Pentium Processor 150 MHz MMX Pentium Overdrive

over 24 hours straight of playing a pretty graphics intensive slot machine with no problems whatsoever...completely satisfied.

It almost sounds like you do have the 166 mmx chip. If so then getting it to run at 233 seems right in line with what others have been able to get. Regardless, as long as you are stable that's all that matters.
