Lost sound installing HP audio updates
I installed an Audio update on my HP Pavilion 6630 and now have no sound, no speaker Icon, Lost Audio Playback and Record in Multimedia. I even tried to reinstall the original Software with my HP Recovery Disc and it just "hangs up" when I try to run it. I hear you can install Windows 98SE over the top of HP's W98SE OS. Short of reformating and losing everything, I have run out of ideas.

im thinking a registry restore may be in order here. To run Win98’s Scanreg /fix:
(You will type in the words that I have bolded.)
Go to Start>>Shut Down>>Restart in MS-DOS, and at the “C:\WINDOWS>_” prompt type in cd\ and hit Enter>>type Scanreg /fix at the “C:\” prompt, hit Enter and Scanreg will do the rest. It will tell you when it’s done (a few minutes at least) and you just move the funky cursor over OK and click. Type exit at the DOS prompt and it’ll put you back into Windows. All done.
(Notice that there is a space between Scanreg and /fix.)

I tried scanreg /fix and also restore. No sound. I'm actually getting a error message stating I have no sound card. Waiting to hear from HP, but still searching for an answer. Thanks for your input. I must have downloaded the wrong update, but it looked innocent at the time.

The only audio update for that system is http://www.hp.com/cposupport/swindex...html#Microsoft, dated 11/20/00. Is that the one you downloaded?

Yes, that's the one. I also downloaded the Video Driver update. After a little reading I notice the video driver updates video support with Directx7. I have Directx8 installed. Could that be the problem?

Could be. DirectX 8 has been causing some grief with some folks. Have you checked Device Manager for conflicts? Checked the audio properties to make sure it's not too low or muted? Speaker connections? I know this sounds like a "shotgun" effect, but sometimes it's the little stuff we miss.

No conflicts in Device Manager. Audio Properties lists "No recording devices" and "No playback devices". Checked all my speakers connections. No Speaker icon is in the Taskbar and I cannot bring up the Volume Controls in Accessories. It's like everything is gone. I even thought about uninstalling Directx8 and going back to Directx7, but no uninstall is listed in Microsoft Updates.

Direct X uninstaller is at the link!
Be darn if I were to go that route I would make sure my Backups were up to date http://www.ebrink.com/dxun/Direct.htm
Better chance than I had. Had to restore.
Direct X upgrade was a BIG mistake for me.

Could very well be the DirectX--your sound drivers may support 7, but are having an argument with 8. At this point, you might as well try try Train's idea.

Thanks Train and Bistro. I'm going to back up everything and use the DirectX uninstaller. I'll post back any results tomorrow. Appreciate the help.

I installed DirectX uninstaller and followed the directions to uninstall DirectX-8. Finally found a place to download DirectX-7. I apparently didn't remove all the files from DirectX-8 and DirectX-7 wouldn't install. I'll try it again. I even attempted to reformat using HP's Recovery Discs. They "Hung Up" my computer and I had to manually shut the computer down and reboot. "What a fine mess I've gotten myself in" Now I have no sound, no Direct X, Can't play Games, and HP's Recovery Discs don't work. HP told me to run "Scandisk" in DOS and check my system resources, which I did (86%). Recovery Disk still hangs up. How about Reinstalling Windows 98SE over the top of HP's Windows 98. I was thinking that might get my Sound back, but I'm not sure if it would correct my Direct X problem.
