Problem connecting 2 comps via modem

I need to be able to connect a windows 95 PC to a piece of equipment that has a small computer with a modem interface. How it is supposed to work is that you assign an IP address on the equipment and then on your PC in Internet Explorer you type that IP and you can talk to the eqiupment with a java interface.

I am trying to use dial up networking to accomplish this, and I can get the 2 modems to synch (all that funny beeping) but when dial up networking attempts to put in the user name and password an error pops up and the connection dies. The error says something like 'your network setting are not properly set up for dial up networking' which could mean anything. I just left the username and password blank because the equipment does not have either.

Is there anyway to just create a connection without a password or username (because this is apparently what is killing it)?

    Just a thought...

There are relatively cheap devices that provide a phone interface between the computers called a "ring-down circuit". It acts like the public telephone system when you try to connect like that and may solve your problem.

To connect without a password would open the recieving computer to potential outside hacking if it is connected to any other form of connectivity... are you sure you want to do that?
