    ICS between W2kPro And W98SE

Ok folks, the story so far.........

W2K machine SMC1233TX set on 10 half duplex, TCP/IP with everything set to auto, NetBEUI and IPX installed. This is the one with the dial-up that I want to share with W98SE machine.

W98 machine: Genius2000II card setup as above.

Machines connected with CAT5 crossover cable.

So far so good: Both Computers can "see" each other, and access files and so forth.

Now, I know that to set this up to actually share the connection (which was the main purpose of the nework in the first place) the W2K machine will have a static IP address of 192.168.0.1 and that the subnet mask will be set to 255.255.255.0 and everything that I have read suggests 192.168.0.2 for the W98SE machine. All well and good, but when I set things up like that, everything goes horribly pear shaped. I have no doubt that this is something to do with all the other TCP/IP settings, but NOWHERE have I found clear instructions on how to get them set up so that I can go on to the next step which is actually setting up the W98 machine to use the W2K machine's dial up.

Thanking in advance any of you networking gurus who can help me sort this before I have torn out my remaining hair!

    The Saga Continues...........

Got sick of banging my head against a brick wall, so I went to bed. The following morning I set the ip manually on host and client, and to my astonishment it worked perfectly! In short order I had got the client (w98se) machine to use the dial-up on my W2kpro machine.

Only one irritation left to sort out, and I am feeling really stupid about it. When I was searching the microsoft knowledge base to find out how to set up the share, I noticed an article about MSN messenger not working on a client machine. The w98 machine belongs to my girlfriendand she has lord knows how many im contacts on messenger and now she can't use it and idiot that I am I didn't note the article number and can't find it now by searching the kb. D'OH!

    Sorted!

Put netbui onto the lan and turned off zone alarm on both machines and everything is now working fine. Will put zone alarm back on and configure it..... with any luck that will be the end of the story.

I have to say that I have learned a hell of a lot setting this up, and am now basking in a rosy self-congratulatory glow of achievement.
