    Dial in to networking question

I have 3 computers at home on a lan that works great....I would like to be able to dial into the network possibly using pcanywhere....I have a cable modem on 3 system lan..could I share the cable modem with the computer that dials in and how would I go about this..

Explain in a bit more detail your current setup. What OSes, internal IP addresses/subnet masks, what you're using to share the cable modem etc. Also, why PC Anywhere? Would using Windows' Dial-Up Networking be acceptable?

current set up is 3 ibm compatibles running winme and using ICS to share connection no problems in any area.....using 192.168.0.x setup with 255.255.255.0 subnet mask...just mentioned pcanywhere because it is handy and I do not use a phone line connection on any of my home computers only the cable modem

I would like to hear when you get this working. Right now I can get out from my home LAN via cable, to my Office LAN (NT4)using Virtual Private Networking. Sorry, don't know what kind of set-up is needed on the NT4/WinME end of things. On the "dialing in" computer: (1) be sure that VPN is installed; (2) under My Computer>Dial-Up Networking, create a new dial-upconnection and identify the device as the VPN (rather than a modem); (3) configure the VPN connection properties with the correct IP and DNS settings. Connect by selecting the VPN connection. Mine prompts me for the typical network passwords already established on the server. Hope this helps and that someone can fill in the missing ME portions. - mm

OK, you can't use PC Anywhere to allow access through the cable modem while you're using Windows ICS. If you ever get a hardware router or buy one of the more advanced NAT programs like Sygate Home Network or NAT32 then you can use port forwarding to allow connections to PC Anywhere, but ICS doesn't support it.

With regards to VPN, I don't know a whole lot about it. However, from what I can see in various web pages, setting up a VPN yourself requires a server-class OS (NT Server, 2000 Server etc) or an expensive router that includes a VPN server. There's reports of problems with ICS and VPN too.

I think the cheapest way to do this would be to replace ICS with software that allows port forwarding, then run PC Anywhere on one of your internal machines. Next up would be a home router (you only need a 1-port router because you can just connect your hub to that) with PC Anywhere, and finally VPN. I think VPN will cost you a huge amount of money to set up though, even if it does provide the most transparent extension of your LAN.

You can use MS netmeeting ver 3 for remote desktop sharing.

    Also VNC from AT&T http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0...st-7-1.2466323
