    Tips for Network maintenance

Does anyone have a suggestion as to some things I can quickly check to see how the server is running (i.e. disk space, errors, etc.)? We have experienced some server crashes and I would like to set up a check list of items to check in order to prevent a crash before it happens.

    Thanks!

I use Hyena to check my 19 servers daily. I put all my servers in a quick access group and just go thru one at a time and check disk space and the event logs which shows invalid logons, system problems and application/printer problems. The results you get depend on what you have set up in Auditing.

The best part about this software is that it comes with a program called DumpSec where you can dump out privelages off you shared drives in a nice little report instead of going thru them individually.

Hyena is free for 30 days and DumpSec is free forever. Hyena is worth the 250 some dollars!

You don't say what hardware you're using.

We run all Compaqs, initial outlay may be a little high but uptime and support soon make that well worth while.

Compaq provides an FOC package with their servers called Insight Manager which provides: a system overview, with status on all sections, then details down to the server where this includes - Configuration, Recovery, System Boards, Expansion Boards, Utilisation, NICs and Mass Storeage.

All this displayed on my desktop, real time. There are options for pageing, et al.

I'd check with my server manufacturer or supplier, in your position.
