Win98 Hub Network
Hello:
Can some kind soul point me to a FAQ or HOWTO in order to set up a network with win98?
Here is my situation... I have 4 computers connected via hub. All have itentical network configurations (execpt for IP addresses and computer names, of course!) I am using NETBEUI and TCP/IP for protocols. My *Ultimate* desire is to have one internet connection that all computers can use, including seperate email addresses (internal). I know, one step at a time!
On one computer, I can see the rest of the network via Network Neighborhood and can connect to all of them fine. On the rest of the computers, I cannot see any networked computers at all. I can, however ping all of them and they return good pings.
This has me pulling my hair (well, what's left of it) out.
Also, does someone have any good comments about any of the myriad of modem sharing software out there? I have a cable modem that I would want to share with the other computers.
Thanks in advance.

Check to see if you have your File Sharing setting check marked. This sometimes keeps the computers from showing up on your network neighborhood although your connection is good with all the computers.
If you still can't see them after that then try mapping a drive to one of the computers and using files from that connection.I am almost sure it's in your file sharing because you say you have a good connection with all the computers.

This was a problem that I had and found that I needed to set all of the IRQ's to be close in number to work. (Mine are set to IRQ 10 or 11.) I needed to pull out the conflicting card (usually the modem) as Win98 doesn't easily let you change IRQ's.
To see your settings go to start|control panel|Device manager|system to see your settings. Also after installing all devices check for conflicts. Look at the sound card too.
I'm also interested in how to share a single modem or a high speed internet connection.

About your protocols, I would like to tell you that Win 98 SE gave me some problems when trying to connect to the net, because I also had NetBEUI and TCIP/IP at the same time. My advice is, get rid of NetBEUI, you just do not need it. I have a 2 pc network with a 3com hub and everything is working properly.

I agree w/ langaro about removing NetBEUI. I have set up a win98 peer to peer with just TCP/IP and it worked fine.
If you have win98se, you can use internet sharing to let all your computers have access to the net. You can get easy instructions at www.annoyances.org.
Click on Win98 annoyances website, articles & features, and then internet connection sharing.
good luck.
