Cannot see posts
Could someone please have a look at this thread http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/004949.html and tell me if they can view all the posts. Although they are registered in the main forum, when I open the thread, I cannot see any past the one by kingin123 posted 05-07-2002 04:40 PM. I have been trying for over an hour and have emptied my cache, tried refresh, shut down and reopened my browser, tried holding the shift key down argghhh!

Wasn't there (only 4 out of 8 replies) on my FIRST look (no cache to worry about at all) then looked at this http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/004930.html post to count the replies to see if it was just "your" one that had the discrepancy (there weren't any missing), clicked back on the link to kingin123's post and all 8 replies were there.
Go figure.
**edit** this was from work machine which uses same ISP provider as you A-M so that may be a hint - I reckon XTRA are caching the pages somehow?

Thanks smurfy - yep I'll bet you are right. I really am getting sick of my ISP. I can see the posts now but I also tried another PC shortly afterward (same ISP) and couldnt see the replies on that one either.

It almost certainly is caused by the ISP, but it's not their fault.
The quick fix is to hold Shift and click Reload. In addition to ignoring your browser cache, that also directs every proxy server along the way to ignore their cache. Even if you don't have a proxy server set, chances are your ISP has one and is routing your web traffic through it.
As for the root cause and laying blame... the only anti-caching device here is a tag at the top of each page which reads:
Code:
<meta HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
That's all well and good, and by convention it stops your browser from caching the page, but by itself it does nothing against proxy servers caching it. By the HTTP standard, proxy servers are only required to respect Cache-control or Pragma lines in the reply headers, not analyse the page itself. The VDr servers, last time I checked, give out neither - for this sort of dynamic content, they should be spitting out both to cover HTTP 1.1 and 1.0 proxies.

Tuttle - I have tried holding down the Shift key and reloading but its making no difference. I'm still having big problems. Its now happening with nearly every thread I have replied to and some others that I have looked at. It has happened intermittantly in the past but not like this. Its most frustrating and although I guess the posters will get help from others, I feel like I have left the posters in the lurch

Need to determine if the problem is with your browser, one of the other programs being loaded on your computer or with your ISP. Here's what I'd try.
First, temporarily set your browser's Homepage to http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/004949.html. Then empty your brower's cache and close your browser.
Click Start|Find|Files or Folders..., type in hosts and press [Enter]. *IF* a file named simply "hosts" (no extension) is found, (probably in your "C:\WINDOWS" directory), right-click it and select Rename. Type in hosts.bak and press [Enter].
Click Start|Run, type in msconfig and press [Enter]. Click the General tab, select Selective startup then uncheck everything below it. Click Apply|OK then reboot your system.
Log back onto the internet and your browser should land on the page that's giving you the problem. If you now see all the posts, (currently 12), then you know that the problem is not your browser or ISP. (It's either some other program that was running on your system or one of the lines in your HOSTS file).
If you still can't see all the posts, I'd temporarily try a different browser. (Like an older version of Netscape). If that doesn't work either then I'd start pointing a finger at your ISP. (No no, not THAT finger! )
Once you get your system reconfigured back to the way it was, (reverse the steps above), log back in here and let us know what you found out.

Hi Vernon - I have also having problems viewing the posts when I logged in from another computer in my household with a different OS and browser but same ISP. I did check the hosts file on both PC's though just in case something there was causing the snag but there is no VirtualDr address in either.
Now heres an odd thing. My ISP went down tonight for about 2 hours (not nationally but in our area) and now that I'm back on line, I can see the posts. Beats me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will last.
Thank you very much though. I do appreciate your help.

AnnMarie, you don't have to answer this if you don't want to, but are we by any chance dealing with ihug?

Tuttle, no Xtra (TelecomNZ's ISP) has had this issue before (I used to avoid coming here from work for that reason).
They are also crap at updating their DNS.

I had very similar problems with the ihug squid boxes here in Adelaide (when they were up at all). I know they're all managed by the NZ office, which is why I asked the question. Sounds like there's more than one ISP who doesn't know how to manage their caching properly though.
