    Word file will not open

I am running word 2000, file was made on word 97. When I try to open the file I get the message.
"The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
Check the file permissions for the document to drive. (I don't know what this means.)

Use the file open dialog box to locate the dacument." (I tried File=>Open and right clicked the file and selected Open. Get the same message)

Looking at the file properties everything looks normal.

    Thanks for any help.

firstly, open word and then the file (file menu, open option) rather than double clicking on the file. if this works then it is a file association probelm which can be resolved as somewhere below...
if not, try renaming the file.
also try right click the file but must be holding the shift key down when you right click and select 'open with', now select 'other' from the window which appears (its important not to choose word from the list at this stage). now browse to c:\progam files\microsoft office\winword.exe (if its not there it is usually some where within that folder structure..) then highlight winword.exe and click ok until you get to opening the file. if it has opened the file then it is simply a file assocaiaiton problem ans just repeat the process but put a tick in the box always association with.

if it does not open it or you can not rename it, then you may not have persmission to access it (this only applies if you are running windows nt4 or windows 2000). if you are running win95/98/Me, then the file maybe corrupt.

let us know whta the outcome is please

I guess the file is corrupt. None of your suggestions worked, I get the same message. It was not a large file and I have a hard copy, but I can't figure out why it failed, I guess I better check all the rest of my files.

    Thanks for you help.
