I knew it was a subroutine term but I didn't understand it the first time I heard about it - there's little chance I'll be more successfull at 2AM

Jeeze, I can't understand it at 2AM yet these guys can invent it at 2AM - I feel very inadequate.
according to the inventors, it was coined after they realized that the type of an argument in Algol-60 could be figured out in advance...In other words, it had `already been thought of'; thus it was christened a `thunk', which is "the past tense of `think' at two in the morning".
