Adsl modems in uk
Ok i have adsl with worldonline (now tiscali)
and i want to use a internal modem with it.
do i HAVE to use the usb modem they supplied a green stingray looking thing
which is a alcatel speed touch usb modem(which can hit speeds of 8mb/sec)
or can i use another modem ?
and will i see much of an increase really is it worth paying the extra money for another modem ?
i only ask this is because usb standard 56kb/s modems are SOFTWARE i was wondering is this the same with adsl usb modems?
i live in uk with 512kbps adsl connection
another question a friend of mine who lives in sweden says he connects his network card straight into a wall socket and sets up network settings for his adsl connection is the wall socket his adsl device and could i do this ?.
thanx mike

Hi Mike3d,
USB modems are CPU intensive. They drain the power.
Use the RJ45 (Network Cable). NTL cable modems are good. You can hire theirs instead of buying.
Cheers.

That'll teach me to read the question properly.
I was sat next to someone who works for NTL and got sidetracked
(He reckons cable is better than DSL)
Whoops.

Here in the U.S., you can use any type of modem you want (PCI, USB, Ethernet) as long as the modem is designed for the type of system your ISP uses. Most ISP's here can provide all three modem types to the customer. If your ISP won't swap yours for you, I'd at least find out from them what brand/model of PCI modem they carry, and then look for a used one.
Out of the three types of modems, an external Ethernet-based modem is the best to have, since it's easy to share the connection with other computers (if you have a network). If you don't ever intend to share the connection, then a PCI modem would be alright. The theoretical speed limits of each modem type are very different, (Ethernet fastest, then PCI, then USB) but in the real world, you'd probably never notice much of a speed difference between them. I'd check your download speeds, then compare that with other people who have your ISP, to see if it's worth going through the effort. There's lots of testing utilities and DSL info at DSL Reports.
As far as your friend who plugs directly into the wall outlet, it sounds like he's connecting to a LAN, which has DSL service. Does he live in an apartmet building, or in a University dorm or something? The only other possibility is that he has an internal DSL modem, and the wire he's connecting to the wall outlet is an RJ-11 wire (normal phone wire) which is what DSL runs over to connect between the modem and the outside, and not a cat-5 networking cable.
