In most cases the capping occurs outside your computer at a remote station or server, so there is little you can do about it. Some places "claim" to have patches or programs to get around this, but there is disagreement whether they actually do anything. Here are a couple of places to look at for speed information:

    http://www.speedguide.net/index.shtml

    http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/

If your performance is really poor, perhaps a call to your provider is in order. Also there are factors like the wire quality in your home that can affect your connection. The sites I listed should explain some of the things you can do.

Uncapping your speed is something done server side, as in your ISP's side. You probably wont be able to, but I can direct you to www.speedguide.net
    Hope this helps.

    pimpholic,

There is a difference between uncapping and tweaking. The capping is done by the ISP to restrict data flow outside your computer. The registry hacks that you are probably referring to are the tweaks that are listed in this thread. Hacks to the MTU, RWIN can be accomplished directly or with a third party tweak program. Also adjustments to port settings.IMHO the actual uncapping programs floating around the net probably will have no effect and if they do are most likely against the TOS for your ISP.

yes i know that. but i know of people in my area that somehow tweak or uncap to get a much faster speed. all the tweaks i have tried have done nothing. i think i would manually have to go through my registry to change certain keys. thing is i don't know what to change to what

Most of the tweaks available are essentially registry hacks. It is just in a simpler form for people who are unfamiliar with the registry. I don't know if you were at Speedguide and saw this page: http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_mode...registry.shtml

There are a few reigistry hacks on it.

Perhaps you might want to consider a download accelerator program. I use Download Accelerator Plus (DAP). You can get it at http://www.speedbit.com

    DAP is free, but ad-supported.

Here is another program you can try. It allows you to make some registry changes. You can change your MTU, RWIN, TTL, and a couple other things. One important note is the most important tweak you can do is the RWIN settings. This has the greatest impact on throughput.

I used this awhile back before going to cable. It had only marginal effects on dial-up, but who knows with DSL.

If there are people in your area who have done this, why dont you ask them how they did it. If you start messing with your registry not know exactly what you are doing you may not even be able to return to the virtual docter to get your puter operating again
