One thing is, if you have a v90 modem, that could be the problem. From what I have seen, AOL has alot of problems with these type modems. Another problem could be in the server where you dial in. That AOL connection could be having problems right now...How long have you been having problems with it and what version of AOL are you using. Also what kind of modem....JJ

Go to the AOL sign on screen, hit expert setup or something like that, go to the connection speed setup. It is probably at 115200, take it down to the lowest setting, then see if you can connect. With netzero, go to startmenu/setting/internet option then click on the connections tab. Click on Netzero the settings, you should be able to turn the speed down there. First try AOL and see if will let you connect. If it does let us know. You won't be able to do much at this speed but it will let me know if you can connect and stay connected.....BTW what kind of PC do you have......JJ

When two ISPs are affected, suspect the phone service:

    * When you use the hand set do you hear a lot of noise on the line? Have the phone company check the line.

    * If you have call waiting, do you turn it off before using the computer?

    * Do you have an extension phone? If someone picks it up, that will knock the computer off-line.

Try this. Go into control panel, add/remove programs. Remove your modems. Restart your computer to let windows pick up on the MOdem. Let windows install. Then try to connect and see if it helps any. Let me know if it does or not......JJ

Had the same problem with my internal Pctel HSP V.90 modem. First of all AOl told me to update my drivers (they were the latest!) then blamed the tel line so I had the tel guys look at it(no probs) & turn up the gain, but still had problems with Aol, although my connections to other ISP's were virtually flying! I then noticed the modem type in AOl was set to basic PcTel generic so i changed that - no joy. Aol then told me that it's software sees all HSP modems in that way! (so why the alternatives?) HOWEVER after a couple of weeks one guy did tell me some thing that made a difference, to change the first line of the modem string to AT&F^M

This did improve matters but i still get the ocasional prob getting in but not half as bad as before. Think their problem is not enough phone lines & too many people

All you need to do is:
Sign on screen, set up, expert setup, devices tab -pick modem, edit, modem, edit commands.
Hope it works for you. It has for me - but then it may be different in the U.K. (Woodham Walter, Essex - v.v. rural!) can't see why not tho' but I have noticed when visiting the US, AOL is not v "sparkly"! You can change your string back to default if you want later - so why not go for it!!
    best of luck
    Ros x
