I get disconnected from aol, alta vista, after 10 minutes,,,
HELP!!
I am currently using AOL 5.0 and routinely get "Good Bye" right
in the middle of my work. It is not related to anything I'm doing
at the time, since it is random. Our family is only able to use
aol for about 15 minutes or so before we are disconnected.
I have talked to aol and each time I call I get a different answer.
I had enough so I tried using Alta Vista, NetZero, and FreeI.net
based upon the April PC World article.
Well, guess what, I am still getting disconnected after about
10 minutes or so. All we are doing is trying to read our mail.
This problem is driving me crazy! I need help and don't know
where to turn! What can I do? Is it the actual phone line,
the modem, the computer, the ISP? I also seem to be disconnected
using an entirely different computer in the basement, but it is
using the same phone to dial out. HELP!!

Try using freeweb, go to www.freeweb.com
I have not had a problem with their service.
Uninstall AOL, just get rid of it.
There is no spoon.

If you are using Outlook Express, try this:
A.
Under the [Tools] Menu, go to [Options...]
Then click the [Connection] tab and see if
'Hang up after sending and receiving'
is checked. If so, uncheck it.
B.
Under [Tools] then [Accounts...]
Look to see if any of the accounts name a connection by name specifically. If so, click on that account, then hit [properties], then [connection] then uncheck the 'always use the following connection' box.
The above should guarantee no interference from Outlook Express.

Have you got a communications program on you're pc. i.e. make and receive phone calls/faxes/answerphone/voicemail etc.
If you have and it uses the same modem then check the phone settings for disconnect if idle for __ minutes. Does this happen when you're reading downloaded e-mails without connecting to other links. The phone company could also have an inactivity time disconnect. Try ringing them and ask.
