    Mandrake8 and Matrox G450

Anybody got these to work ?And step by step instructions if you do.

I recently bought the G450 and tried it with a working 7.1 install, but I wasn't up to the task of trying to upgrade xfree86 ,so I formated the Mandrake partition and figured a fresh start with 8 would be easier

Followed the info contained in the readme HERE but :

    QUOTE:
Once the new version of XFree86 is installed and working properly, the G450

open source driver can be installed by copying mga_drv.o into

/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers (or wherever your X11R6 directory is located.)

I clicked on the xfree86 4.0.3 RPM and it says its already installed ,but how can I tell if its working?
I have no drivers folder listed at /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers just /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/ and a few misc files none of which have a *.o extension,so where do I put this file.

I'm assuming the GUI is working off my onboard video (which I can't disable ,no jumpers or bios settings)because I was in the GUI at one point ,but my vidcards were listed as mach64vt2(correct onboard) and G450 16MB (mine is 32MB)If I try to change my vid card using linuxconfig or was it harddrake ,I can't remember, and since I tried to implement the changes MATROX suggested in their readmes I can't startx it just gives errors(sorry its late and I can't remember them ).

Anyway if someone has been able to set up a G450 32MB please let me know ,it will at least give me the incentive to keep trying.I'm building a new comp in a couple weeks and the G450 will be the only vidcard and I would like to be able to continue trying to use LINUX on it.

First thing you would want to try is find the location of your mach64vt2 driver. You might try find / -name mach64vt2\* -print. When you find it, move your mga_drv.o driver to the same location.

Now we want to edit your XF86Config-4 file. Go to the Device Section, where your mach64vt2 driver declaration is located. Change the Driver "whatever" to Driver "mga". That should be all you need to do. A hell of allot easier than doing a re-install. -mk
