thanks a lot danns, that problem wasn`t happening on my machine, it was an install i did on a cousin`s pc. it`s getting a little harder to gain access to that machine right now, and my cousin is not pretty interested in using an os that doesn`t even shows a decent cursor... i`ll try that the first chance i get, also, i`ll try your advice on my machine too, that runs `x without desktops`...
i`d like to change the default cursor for the `x` one. anyway, thanks a lot, i`ll let you know how that turns out.

i´m afraid it didn´t work... i don´t know what to do... could it be a problem with the video card? is like totally annoying to use that machine running x window.
    any advice/help is welcomed, thanks.

I'm surprised xsetroot did not work, perhaps there is a video issue at play. What happens if you use a different window manager, or no manager at all?

drop out of x and type xinit (if it brings up your windowmanager, you may have to temporarily mv .xinitrc to another name).

Try twm: In .xinitrc comment out exec gnome and put in

    exec twm

If the cursor is the same here, try xsetroot again.

If the cursor looks like your gpm cursor, why not try uninstalling the gpm rpm and see if this makes a difference.
