gnome refuses to load, why [?]

i have a question, hope that someone could help me. i`ve installed red hat 7 on a cousin`s computer. everything went well with the install.
we had to fumble a little with the xwindows install, because his card as -well as the monitor- wasn`t in the list. we picked a generic of the same brand.

    chip: mach 64 lt
    monitor: compaq presario fp700

as i said the install went well, the only problem was that x windows, with gnome, didn`t showed a standard cursor, but a white rectangle.
but, all of a sudden, gnome refuses to load, the machine just hangs there, trying to do that for ever....
x windows works just fine, i can load sawfish or twm without the slightest trouble.
below there is a copy of a `startx > /tmp/x_trouble` i did -had to close the process by hitting `ctrl+alt+back`.
i really don`t what might be happening, gnome worked fine, but all of a sudden refused to load.
towards the end, there are some very cryptic error reports, any help is welcomed.

Does the same thing happen when you are logged in as root?

thanks for the answer danns, yes, it happens with all the users...
i`ve read in some gnome mailing lists archives, that a solution to that problem was:
a- to add an entry in the /etc/hosts list, which i did.
b- delete all the .gnome* and related files form the home directory, which i did
neither of those solutions worked, i`m all ears.

i`m glad to say that gnome is working just fine again... the problem was that linux wasn`t using all the ram available, therefore, loading gnome was a nightmare, the poor system was trying to load it with less than 8 mb or so.

    see: http://discussions.virtualdr.com/For...ML/002401.html

thanks to everybody on the forum...

yeah, maybe you`re right, but, i was really concerned because that was happening on a machine that is not mine, and i did the install... my own machine doesn`t have a gui. and except for a few programs, i think that linux is pretty easy to live with a command prompt. the gui confuses me a lot, there are a lot of options for everything.
anyway, is good to konw that it is working again.
