You may need to install the dhcpcd (DHCP client deamon) package. To see if any dhcp packages are installed, you might try"

    find / -name \*dhcp\* -print

    -mk

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

First, AFAIK, only external ethernet DSL modems will work in Linux. If your modem connects to your PC through a network card, keep reading...

First, make sure Linux has installed your network card correctly.

Does your provider use PPPoE to assign IP addresses? If so (and most do), then you need to install Roaring Penguin. I know there's a version that comes with Mandrake, but you're better off getting it from the source. If you do use PPPoE, setting your network card (usually listed as eth0 ) to either a static IP or to 'disable' works best, as the PPPoE is like a dial-up connection, in that it creates it's own interface when it loads, called ppp0.

Also, whenyou run the setup for Roaring Penguin, you'll need to enter your DSL login name, password, and the DNS server IP addresses of your provider. You can get the DNS servers in Windows, by going to Start->Run, and typing winipcfg [enter]. Click on the button that says More Info, and your DNS servers will be listed.

If your provider uses DHCP, or even a static IP address (both are becoming very rare nowadays...), then check out the Linux HowTo's for configuring your Network settings. There might be some documentation or a tutorial on the Mandrake site, and also look at Red Hat's site as well (since Mandrake is based on RH.)
