    Upgrading a 486-66dx

Can I run windows 3.1 safely?
Can a version of explorer and netscape work also?
How much simm ram should one grab for such a low system upgrade of $100cnd.?
Where would I find a 8 mb video card?
SVGA moniter PII, 16 bit video card, S/V mouse and keyboard connections.
Can I anyway expect to upgade it on the current mobo to a possible 166?
These are some of my computer woes...

    OK!
If you are installing it on a system which has Windows 9.x or later, it could damage long filename files if you access them with Windows 3.1 or DOS 6.x.

Otherwise, Windows 3.1 is more reliable once set up then later Windows. It does not change its settings each time you start it.

The Down side is very few later programs will work with it. So you are limited to older programs.

Internet Explorer 4.x was available for Windows 3.1. I don't believe any version to IE 5 was made for Windows 3.1

As for the Video card, you would need an older, obsolete card for the computer. Although the latest cards will display both your DOS and Windows 3.1, you will, most likely, be unable to find drivers to run in any other resolution than 16 color mode.

These days, if the case is and AT, you can install a new motherboard and take advantage high speed processors. Your memory is pretty much limited to what the motherbaord can handle. DOS can only manage up to 64mb. I have run 16mb on a 386, and 20mb on 486. The do pretty good with that much, even running Windows 95.

Hope this answers enough of your questions.

72 pin ram seems easier for me to find used tha 30 pin. bought 8 megs today for 2 dollars.

    sillydog has old netscape browsers.

i have netscape 3.04 on my 486 100 mhz cpu.
    works ok,

look for a board with the wide simms 72 pin , doesnt matter if its 486 or pentium . both work , should be between 66 to 100 cpu at least
