start up troubles
I recently tried to create a partition using ph disk on my laptop, now I can't get it to boot past the cpu detection.
therefore it will not reach the dos prompt is this a bios problem if so how can i get to the C:>prompt

If you changed or deleted the primary partition, the computer cannot boot from the hard drive. You must boot from a boot disk. You must have a primary partition and it must be set as Active.
Once the partition is created, it must be formatted. Depending on what you paln to use on the computer determines whether you want the hard drive to have boot files on it at this point. If you plan to install MS-DOS from the install disk, you must not have boot files already on the drive. This is also true if you are going to install a full version of Windows 95 or 98.
To format the drive, boot from a boot disk with the format.com on it. Then at the A:\> prompt tpe:
format c:
If that boot disk has the version of operating files you want on the hard drive, then type:
sys c:
Tp set the partition with DOS, boot with a boot disk with the fdisk.exe on it. See Partitioning/FDISK for information on that.

will give it a try but I think the problem lies within the bios as i don't seem to be to get past the stage where the floppy is engaged

Hey There,
Check the BIOS to make sure the 'Boot Sequence' is set at: A,C .
Also, where exactly does it stop? After CPU Detection does it count off memory? Do you get an error message?
How old is the system battery?

sorry about the delay had to go too work
yes the sequence is set to a,c
it stops after cpu detection no memory count it just stops tried leaving it for about 2 minutes but no action.
I'm sure it is something to do with the partition perhaps either not active or not in the right location but as you can guess I'm no expert

Hello,
Well if it can't even get to a boot floppy, the hard disk is not even coming into play.
If you verified the boot sequence A,C, then that means you can get into the BIOS. Is it showing the correct date and time? Are the keyboard and floppy lights doing their quick flash on bootup? Is the A: drive set to 1.44mb in the CMOS?

It sounds like an equipment failure. See Trouble Shooting DOS for things the check. Have you added any hardware, memory or touched anything inside that might possibly be connected wrong?
If it is failing to boot to a floppy, it has nothing to do with the partition. Even BIOS settings should not cause this.

You mentioned that you used a program called "ph disk" to create the partition. Thats when the problem started. Im not familiar with that prog. Can you provide more info?
I would reoomend unplugging the hard drive to see if it would boot to a floppy but this is a laptop.
Check the BIOS to make sure that the hard drive is recognized correctly on the hardware level

Please do a little research before posting replys like replace the battery. Thats not helpful at all.
Also, please never assume anything. If you cant see the other computer you cant possibly know what the user means. What they are saying is not necessarily at all what they mean
