Happy New Year to Everyone. I finally got my hands on some Windows 3.11 disks. I followed the instructions given to me in the last message, however, it still responds with the "error loading progman.exe." Any other suggestions. Thank you.

I read your previous posts and a question (or two) lingers. Did you discover what the virus indicated was? And, when you reinstalled, was this drive formatted with DOS reinstalled so the virus (if any) would not likely to still be around?

Here's an experiment. See Minimum Sized Windows. The first group of files is the minimum you can run Windows on. Copy these into a new directory named testwin as an example. Running only this minimum size program, see if it gives the same result. If it works, then something else is blocking the start of windows. This could be a Video driver.

In you Windows directory, run SETUP. Change the Video to VGA. Then see if the Windows program boots.

Let us know what this does.

Thanks for the suggestion. The virus is a stealth_boot virus. I was able to remove it from my other computers at school, but it knock this particular one out before I had some antivirus software. I did not reinstall DOS, since I do not have any disks to do so.

I am not sure if I understand the testwin instructions, but I'll give it a try and see if I can change the VGA setup.

Make sure that the line
shell=progman
is present in the [boot] section of the system.ini file.
If it reads anything other than that change it. If it is not present add it

For the test, you make a new directory:
md c:\testwin
md c:\testwin\system
Now copy the files listed for the Windows directory from your windows directory to c:\testwin/. Then copy the listed files for the system directory from c:\windows\system\ to c:\testwin\system. You will have to edit the SYSTEM.INI file. Make sure the following line are:
386Grabber=vgafull.3gr
oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon
fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
display.drv=vga.drv

In the progman.ini file:
display.drv=vga.drv

Change to the c:\testwin and type win.com. See if this windows starts.

Might try starting your Windows with win /n /d:cfsvx at the command prompt. This will exclude some of the drivers that may interfere with the boot. I just installed Windows 3.11 on my Tandy 486 (which has a net card) and Windows wouldn't boot. Used the win /n switch and it worked. Windows installed the wrong Net card drivers.

Thanks for your help everyone. I could not get anything to work for me, so I just deleted the entire windows directory and reinstalled it. Now everything appears to be working as before. I learned a great deal in our discussions and I'm grateful to everyone who gave me assistance. My students thank you also. Until next time!
