Installing Windows 3.11

Hey everyone...

I have been setting up my computer with multiple operating systems this past week using 'Boot Magic'. To be honest, I really am not very familiar with Windows 3.11, though. I have the setup disks for it, and also for DOS 6.22.

I know that I would have to load DOS first, right, and then install Win3.11? The first setup disk for DOS does not boot my system up, though. And if I use a Windows 95, 98, or ME startup disk to boot up, and then try to install DOS or Win3.11, it says that the boot disk used is an incompatible version of MS-DOS and that I need to replace it. Does anyone know what I have to do? Would I need a DOS 5.0 or 6.22 version boot disk? If so, would anybody be able to email it to me ([email protected])?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The #1 DOS disk is bootable
No other boot disk will work because of the versions
First thing to check is the boot sequence in your systems BIOS. Make sure it is set to A then C

PC is right, the first disk should boot. You can download a DOS 6.22 boot disk at www.bootdisk.com or at http://welcome.to/3.1 or at http://www.powerload.fsnet.co.uk/

Also check your disk No.1 and see if command.com io.sys and win.sys are there.

I guess your boot sequence is OK since you have booted with other disks.

After you boot with the correct disk, you can type: sys c [enter] to copy the correct system files onto your drive. Then insert your No.1 DOS disk and type: setup [enter] when that is all done....and you have rebooted from the command prompt, put in your No.1 Windows disk and type: setup [enter] again.

Oops, that command should be:

   sys c:

(note the trailing colon).

To make absolutely sure it works correctly though, no matter which DOS prompt you happen to be at when you type it, use:

   a:\sys.com a: c:

(and press [Enter]). This tells DOS that you want to use the sys.com program found in a:\ to copy the system files from a: to c:.

Note: If this command returns a "Bad command or filename" error, the DOS sys.com program isn't on the diskette in drive A:.

if its a dos upgrade it wont work, or can you get the boot disc put it on then put on the upgrade without the other discs from original dos??

As far as DOS goes.... upgrades are upgrades. You need a previous version installed.

While you should be able to run any DOS up to 6.22 sucessfully, here is another source:
recycledsoftware.com. This page does list a Full DOS 5.0 for $19.00.
