Bad or missing c:\dos\emm386.exe
I was planning to give my 12 year old daughter my old 486dx2 50mhz which had been upgraded to 100 mhz pentium. I also had win 95 installed. The original o/s was win 3.1 for workgroups.
I am getting the following message when I turn the computer on:
Bad or missing C os\Emm386.exe
Error in Config.Sys line 4
I can't even get the c: prompt
Also, it states that my cdrom is installed however, it is not reading my cdrom. I am using Dos 6.20. Please help me!!
Also shows 1 cdrom drive(s) connected
cd rom device driver installed
LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD0001/M:30/L
FILE NOT FOUND
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 512/X
BAD COMMAND OR FILE NAME
I used the master cd for the computer I am currently using which has windows 95 installed on it. Both computers are Packard Bell.

I made a setup disk from my good system. Now I received a message stating "The compression driver cannot be set up correctly".

You're going to have to find/create a boot disk off another pc with win9x on it. Go to the sick pc and boot off it. When you get to the A: prompt type C: . Then type cd\windows\command . Then type: edit C:\config.sys
Look for and add/edit the line:
Device=C:\windows\emm386.exe noems
Any and all lines in the config.sys should reference the windows directory.
Good Luck.

If you are using the Master Boot disk for the other computer, it is only designed to install fom the CD. On a good computer with Windows 95 on it, Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, select Startup Disk. This will make a disk in the A floppy drive. Use that disk to boot the sick computer.
