    Old 486 working on

I am trying to get an old 486 dx-2 loaded with Windows 95b, the problem I am running into is that I loaded it before fine, but wanted to load 98 in.
After that, I was doing a Scandisk, and it didn't finish, gave some error. So I rebooted the system and went to Windows, but gave an error OLE32.DLL is corrupted, so I did a scanreg /restore but to no avail., would just freeze and spin the hourglass. So I reformatted the drive and got- PCI READ CONFIGURATION ERROR when I tried to load the cd-rom to reinstall Windows.I cleared CMOS and it still comes up, and I can't seem to load mscdex drivers for cd-rom drive, I just need to know how to get the computer to accept it.
It has an Award Modular BIOS v.4.50G
    486 VESA GREEN BIOS<ver. C>
    80486 DX-2-S 66mhz system with 407 mb drive with 16mb fpm..

It has 3 of these interface cards that are used for the drives and ports that hook into the motherboard. had it since 94 with Windows 3.1.
    Has a Sony 2x cd-rom

Is your harddrive bootable now? Can you access C: from A:? If you can't write from A: to C: there must be a partition problem.

    Hi,

If your computer is that old as 1994, then it can be bad CMOS battery. Check your battery voltage - it must be about 3 volts. Or just try to replace old battery with new one and see if it help.
Then it can be some lose contacts in motherboard connectors. Pull out this 3 cards of yours and then reinstall them back.

    Good luck, Igor M

How did Win95 run? Seems like you would have minimum system to get much out of Win95.Win98 would be worse yet. If you formated your hard drive, put Win3.1 back, with everything working right you could try to upgrade to Win95 again.

The Sony 2x requires proprietary drivers, contact your PC vendor's web site to get these (you may need to borrow a pc?) Gateway 2000 has the drivers available on their site. Your 486 will run 95 ok but I don't think the hard drive is big enough for 98. (wouldn't recommend it on anything under a pent166/1GB). Not sure about the PCI read config error though... does this machine have PCI interfaces? (most 486s do not).
    I hope this helps.

    hey
I think that u should stay with win95. t works better then win98. Anyways inside the cases of your computer was there dust? if so get rid of it. take out all the cards then vacumme it out. then put the cards back. ( i just got finished fixing my girl friends computer and i had this problem.) This should get rid of the errors about the PCI thing. Do u have DOS 6.22? Install it before u reinstall Win95. (if u don't e-mail me and i will send it 2 u.) this all i can tell u now. but forget about win98 it will be very slow on a 486.
