Disappearing Cdrom drive
I have just installed XP pro as a dual boot setup on my main computer...Asus a7v133-c motherboard athlon xp1600+ cpu under 98 all is fine but when I boot to xp my cdrom drive is not there....my burner is at all times...and If I go into device manager and scan for hardware changes the cd rom drice will show up and be in my computer for access....but if I reboot it is not there unless I do the scan for new devices again....Is there anyway to make this drive show up at all times....or should I just replace it...

Hi Sarrkazztic,
You may be on to something in replacing the unit, but I wonder if this might have to do with the Master/Slave relationship of the devices? I'd try changing that before swapping the unit out, just to see if that has a bearing on what you are seeing there.

Thanks for the reply limerick....the cdrom is master on the secondary ide port...I have an atapi zip drive that is slave on that channel that shows up all the time no problem...cdr is master on primary channel....both hard drives are connected to a maxtor ultraAta 100 controller....The strange thing is if I boot to 98se instead of xp the cdrom drive shows up no problem...has to be an compatibility issue with xp....but I will double check the orientation of the drives later this week...I am off work friday...will put it up on the desk and check it out......one other question....when I setup XP on this machine I did not download any of the latest Via Drivers......should I maybe download the via busmaster driver and see if that helps....thought I read instances where installing either the 4in1s or the busmaster drivers using xp only caused problems....

Im just curios. Unplug the Zip drive and see what happens. I think we had an issue just like this one at work and it had to do with the Zip. Can't give any suggestions just yet but let me track down my co-worker that was dealing with it and I'll get back w/you.

Update....the cdrom drive is a samsung cd-master32 model scr-3230 I disabled zip drive still not success.....took the cdrom out and put my raite 8x dvd drive in and now the problem does not exist.....that particular cdrom drive must not be fully supported by XP...it worked just fine under 98se....so I will put it in another machine without XP as the operating system...thanks to all that replied
