Are the errors all long filename errors? If you view the partitions with something like ranish, are they all the same? I.E. fat32 lba, or chs, or large? NT and 9x are different in their long filename settings. I don't really use the fat partitions for the NT's, I use it only mostly to transfer files between ntfs and linux, so I don't think a scandisk would generate errors, but I'll move some files to a fat and then scandisk. Do they mostly relate to urls or are they also within programs? Have a look here, also. http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/166/
Maybe here would be better. http://www.winguides.com/search.php?...y&keywords=8.3

Phew, At least there apears to be a reason for this, dckrt8 sorry to hear about your missfortune...
the first time i noticed this was a long time ago, it was on large temp files with filenames like "31.part.met" & "31.part" (i can't remember what scandisk changed them too after and wont be allowing scandisk to repair them again)... so those file names r not long filenames but do have wierd extentsions and dots in odd places tho... anyway, i'll experiment for a bit, b back soon...
i've just ghosted 98 onto PC2 and ran scandisk on all partitions... it doesn't appear as bad as i thought i remembered it to be...
D: [DATA] [No Errors] contains my IE-favorites/OE-mail folders & other docs n pics...
E: [TEMPORY] [2 Errors] has all my temp downloads etc...
F: [FILES] [2 Errors] has some install files, MP3's and other audio stuff waiting to go on CD...
G: [BACKUP] [No Errors] has only ghost images on this partition...
heres a screenshot of the 1 of the errors it finds on drive f: refering to simular files like i mentioned above.
yes they are all long filename errors... it only finds errors in filenames and folders with a "." (dot) in the file/foldername (ie. folder "ProgName 1.01.20"), but only a few of them, most are OK... these files have the right name when viewed from explorer, but its just scandisk that don't like them for some reason...
i can make scandisk not check for "invalid file names" tho by unchecking the box in scandisk/advanced...
Thx & Regards

Just to let everyone know that I have encountered the same problem while running norton's speeddisk on win98, I got long file name errors on the partition hosting win xp. I too made the mistake of letting Disk doctor to fix the problem and after that, I was getting c: not a system drive error on bootup. I ran the undo from disk doctor and it fixed it although I too had to reinstall win98 to get the dual boot to work again.
I think I read somewhere that win xp only allows it's own disk tools to work properly and I also think that you have to do a reg hack to undo this feature.

Hi again, I just edited my last post so it just contains just my findings... and am bumping my revised questions back to the top at the same time...
Thx for the links downtime, allthough I'm not really too clear on the reg edit stuff, not sure wether or not i would still have any long file names anymore.... i just looked in Ranish and all apears normal 2 me...
do u/anyone think it would be better not to share partitions between XP and 98 to keep full 98 compatability in a Dual-Boot PC?
any more links that explain the problem would much be appreciated too.... This must be a common problem, i would think.
Thx & Regards

It's been a few months since I've used 98, been on slack,2k and xp, but I do remember scandisk would claim uncompleted dlds by getright as errors, even if they were being dlded by 98. Just look at the registry setting for NtfsAllowExtendedCharacterIn8dot3Name Use the edit, find in regedit, type, or paste that in, hit find now, and post what it's set at.
I've also noticed some trouble in ME with filenames, and a cd burning prog, that crashes when a certain mp3, with extended characters in the name, is added to the burning list.

cheers m8, just searched Registry for NtfsAllowExtendedCharacterIn8dot3Name and it found nothing... so i went to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\
FileSystem]
the location provided in your link and yes its empty... assuming that empty means enabled,
i added the key anyway and set to 0 for Disable just to try it... as i think i now understand that a filename has 2(or more) reference's on the disk and i would be only effecting the 8.3 DOS Name and not changing the longnames thas used...
i'll have to ghost 98 on it a bit l8er to run a scandisk! (i want to solve the problem on this PC rather than create possible errors on the other dual-booter, 'cuz i haven't back'd-up some partitions for a while)
Thx for the help, what do u use for that reg key, (0 i guess if anything) is that key what solved it for u?

I can't say I've had that particular problem, the scandisk errors were from uncompleted dlds. I found out the other error I mentioned was because the original .wav the mp3 was created from was originally created on a mac, and wasn't a pcmwave file, and wasn't caused by the filename. I will try copying from xp to 98 and run scandisk, though.

Thx downtime, appreciated for the help... as your up for experimenting, put a dot "." in the filename and see what happens, i think a large file will most likly cause probs as well...
Many Thx, Regards

No problems reported by scandisk, even with double dots and )( such. In the reg, you said you didn't have the key. Check for this.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\FileSystem]
"NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation"=dword:00000000
"Win31FileSystem"=dword:00000000
"Win95TruncatedExtensions"=dword:00000001
Pasting that into notepad and saving it as filesystem.reg will allow you to merge it into the registry if you don't already have it.

Yep those are all ready in there, i'll have to let Win98 scandisk fix the errors and then see how it goes from there... the other key i added might have solved it hopefully...
I'll let u know if it is!!!

Thx for your help downtime, just an update... i've just ghosted 98 on it and ran scandisk, it found new errors of the same type in the folder where my temp downloads go, there were no new errors anywhere else...
The previous error it found in another partition was an another incorrect folder name and it still found that 1 too... so, i moved the folder to another part of the drive and then back to its original position... ran scandisk again and it was fixed as scandisk didn't report errors...
so now all errors are contained in files in just 1 folder (temp d'loads)... i shall now ghost back to XP, adjust the registary again and see if any more appear when i retest with 98 another time...
i can live with the errors in the temp folder as when the download completes its changed to a different name anyway...
So yeah, so far i think that reg adjustment is helping matters, thx.
I am doing all this testing on this PC before i start sharing partitions between 98 and XP on my other dual-boot PC.
Regards
