Can i customise XP Scandisk like u can with Win98
A few Brain Teasers for ya'll...[/b] i'll number them for easy answering!
1. does CHKDSK make a "log" file?
2. and is there a "ini" file or simular so i can customise it? if so where are they located?
3. anyone know if there is a way of running CHKDSK from a shortcut so it could check all the drives/partitions at once with a switch like u'd in Win98 by adding "/n /a" after the target in the shortcut properties?
4. also is it safe to use Win98 Scandisk on XP (i have been using it in DOS) b'cuz i know how to customisable it and i get to sort-of see what its done? I can't get Win98 Scandisk to Run on XP tho!
i haven't been able to find a sulution to 1,2or3 as of yet... The only work around i've found is to forget about CHKDSK and just use Win98 Scandisk from on a Boot floppy that automatically runs and checks all drives... it does the job but surely the WinXP CHKDSK can't be that bad... or can it...
TIA, Regards

Lotus, I can answer 3, I got this from Surfer at AT, he did post all the switches but there gone now.
Just make a batch file with the contents like this:
E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CHKDSK C: /F
E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CHKDSK D: /F
E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CHKDSK E: /F
E:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CHKDSK F: /F
EDIT found this from Surfer
D:\>chkdsk /?
Checks a disk and displays a status report.
CHKDSK [volume[path]filename]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]
volume - Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name.
filename - FAT only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation
/F - Fixes errors on the disk.
/V - On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every f on the disk. On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R - Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F).
/L:size - NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified n of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current size.
/X - Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid (implies /F).
/I - NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C - NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.
The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by skipping certain checks of the volume.

Thx Philgo, i see u give in to the wrath of XP u'll have to watch u don't where out your HDD with Ghost HeHe... many thx for your reply.
from your info i put this in a Batch file after trying the various switches...
CHKDSK C: /v
CHKDSK D: /v
CHKDSK E: /v
CHKDSK F: /v
CHKDSK G: /v
------------
Works OK, a lot easier, however, it found errors on my 1st run and promped me to fix them... so i refused it... insted i then ran Win98 scandisk from DOS after (just to confirm it) and it found no errors... then i ran the Batch file again from XP and wierdly it found no errors this time too... so i am confused as to how these errors got fixed and why it found them in the 1st place as i regulary run Win98 Scandisk in "DOS" and AFAIK there were no errors to start with !
EDIT: opps, i realised that it wasn't asking me if i wanted to fix, it was asking me if i wanted to convert lost files to chains, it just fixed it on its own, this gets worst, Damn XP off to Restore my image and try again!
--------------
So i'll have to try it now and then and see how it goes...
i found that if i used the /R switch insted of /v then it would ask me to run it on next reboot (as it should) but, it would only let me do it on 1 drive letter at a time and the only way to close the DOS window was to end task... i tried a work around by making a separate Batch file for each drive plus another Separate Batch file to launch the Batch files for each drive... but it did not work... hmmm
i guess b'cuz Win2k users didn't moan about it M$ thought they'd lumber XP users too (both Home and Pro it seems) with this cr*p hard to customise CHKDSK junk, whatever next!
so if any1 got any more advice for me then it would be appreciated, i'm still looking for answers for Qusstions 1,2 & 4 as well...
Thx & Regards (& happy Ghosting)

Note my above edit... i don't know about happy chkdsking tho ... chkdsk is making me angry, M$ must think we are all thick and can't cope with a few options! oh well, maybe i will find a resolution eventually... or maybe i'll just stick to my ScanDisk on a Floppy Boot Disk!
What would we do without Ghost... i simply wouldn't install an OS without it, period!

Lets all go back to Win95, I'm sure things were easier then, unless I'm losing it, come to think of it I don't think I ever had it in the first place.
