    Should I buy it

What do you think, I doubt if I will.

Philgo...I have no intention of buying it. I am running 98 and as they say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I have a "copy" of it right now just to try and I'll post back and let you know how it works. The first thing I did notice with it was that my @home software called 'Virtual Technician' was having problems. To me it looks kind of cartoonish, but you can switch it back to the classic desktop if you would like.

I've been using it for a little while now, and it is pretty good. If you're into gaming, it's very good for that purpose. I prefer the classic windows environment, and it was pretty easy to change. The bottom line is, the guy a couple of posts up is right. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If you're really looking for a new OS, and you don't want to "borrow a copy of XP purely for evaluation, not piracy", then you should buy it. It's certainly not a necessary upgrade.

    I refuse.

This is only the start of things to come and there are more reasons than that. I'm shifting from MS altogether. I have 4 apps that I use that are MS only. I don't believe in 'swiping my credit card' every time I boot XP and versions thereafter.

Although retail versions of Office XP won't expire, the volume licensed versions DO EXPIRE. I've installed several locations with the MOLP eopen.microsoft.com mumbo jumbo and you WILL have to reactivate in 2 years.

Windows XP is a very stable OS. I like the stability of it. The final version does boot quicker than Win98, ME, and Win2000 on the same hardware. It seems to be the OS that NT4.0 said it was.

Microsoft is a company that offers 'Feature Rich' applications and operating systems. A 'Feature' I don't like is the subscription feature. I like Exchange and Outlook. Lotus is the closest product than can compete with all the features that Outlook has. I'm talking about shared calendars, send on behalf, meeting requests, Public folders, multiple web folders under the mailbox, synchronizing offline (Lotus has replication), and the list of features I like and use heavily on Outlook go on and on.

I professionally will support Microsoft Products if people ask me to but personally I won't. Microsoft wants our company to pay more money so we can use their logo on our web sites and business cards. Not worth it. Looks like our open logo spot is going to be sporting a Penguin with a Red Hat.

Above is a link to some XP screenshots.

I like XP, it has some really cool features, such as:

    ***Ability to copy to CD
    ***Thumbnail views are nicer
***Better Start button, lists recently used programs
***Found more drivers upon install than 98 or ME did
***The look and feel can be configured
    ***More stable
    ***Has built-in firewall
***Sets up a dual boot enviroment upon install, so you can boot to 98/ME or XP

I give XP a "thumbs up"!

Hi all, good to have this new forum just incase! i have had XP on 1 of my PCs for the last week or so... i like it too for all the reasons that GodMonstr stated and more!

However all i wanted at first was the NT kernal... i tried Win2000 on both my PC's and hated it and it incompatability problems and lockups... it had to go! but now i have XP it is far better by a long shot, i haven't had any headaches with XP at all so far!

i may change my opinion over time, as u know new probs do happen, but so far i simply can't fault it! nice work M$!

    Regards

I really hope that I can resist buying it on release day, I don't need it WinMe works fine, but a part of me wants it but I must resist, I cant give in to Microsoft.

Has anyone got any ideas how I can stop myself from buying it, I figure that if I can resist for the first couple of weeks I may be able to do it.

I suppose I could destroy all my credit cards, or give all my money away to charity, I just dont know HELP............

Xp has a lot going for it... It's very easy to use and setup, you can do some complex stuff easy...

But some of the reasons GodMonstr stated are debatable...

The cd burning ability seems a little slow, It has to make and a load a temporary cache first...

The new start menu give me the willies, ack :P...

And I'm not sure about such a wide spread firewall... I'm sure if its not it will be "hacked" very shortly. Plus It does block outgoing connections, and probaly won't do anything at all to keep MS out...

I do love the way it shows pictures... I wish I could get that in 2k...

Philgo, You know that your are going to get XP so it is just a matter of time! As I said to falcon2000 in another post, you are technically oriented people with a computer focus and have shown it by your numerous posts and contributions. Sure you probably don't need XP, but how are you going to sit idly by and not get into this new forum which is a breath of fresh air after the worn out posts on 98 and ME. You know you can't resist it so don't keep us dangling while you make up your mind! Computer technology is still going to be a major contribution to the future. In five years, one will have forgotten these discussions considering the advancements that will have come about. You are hooked and will be unable to ignore what is coming. XP is just another routine step.

I run four computers with 98SE and ME loaded. No problems whatsoever using a broad range of CURRENT software, specifically compatible with ME for that specific computer. I need another OS like a hole-in-the-head except I am hooked. I use custom assembled computers and start with clean installs; consequently, I miss out on being able to experience the majority of the problems that I see posted. Anyway, congratulating you in advance for going on to XP. Heh...Heh....

There is no way I will buy this Operating system. It is overpriced, intrusive, overrated, and the way they try to control what you do with your Hardware should be criminal for a Company to try to get away with. I don't care how big Microsoft is, I can't support this latest crap from them.

That's my take on the matter.

I just come back from a computer fair where XP was on sale for £85.00, I resisted, I gave up smoking once so I'm sure I can give up buying O/S's.

Anyone know if you can get "stop buying O/S's patches" to help me.

    Philgo,

Let's assume you decide to pass on XP, which none of us really need as an essential tool, but it is pouring rain, you have nothing to do so you are reading the posts on this forum. You note the following post, "Help! I was tryng to install XP on a "friend's" 286 computer when my neighbor's dog removed the CD from the drive and ran off with it. I now receive strange error messages, but I failed to record them and now my computer fails to boot. I borrowed another CD ("copy") from another "friend" , but the greed of corporate interests prevent me from using it to recover my system. What can I do?"

At this point, you don't have XP so how are you going to help this innocent victim of monopolistic aggression which threatens to enslave us? No you are doomed like so many others of us. You will either have to join "Software Anonymous" or run out in the rain, swallow your resolve and buy a legal copy of XP. I am confident that I can predict the course you will take. I also believe that even ecrosson will be tempted by this. You all have revealed your true nature by contributing so many posts in the past.

    I rest my case.
