Cloning ntfs drive to fat32 drive

I set up win2k on the smaller of my 2 hard drives 8.4 gig and I like it and decided to keep it...I want to put it on my 20 gig and use my 8.4 as storage...I tried Norton Ghost 6.5 and it comes up with an error I tried 2 times same error...I read that ghost 6.5 cannot see NTFS partitions. How can I copy this drive to my big drive? Or should I do a fresh install on the 20 gig drive...

    Hi Sarrkazztic,

Ghost cannot write to a local drive when formatted NTFS. (However, it can readily do so when writing to a mapped network drive, since the network protocol itself provides the translation that Ghost needs.)

It would be helpful to know exactly what error messages you are getting. There are numerous documents in the Symantec Knowledge base that speak to what you have mentioned here. If you are getting an error regarding the MFT, try adding the -ntc- switch to your Ghost command.

    Happy computing!

I tried it with Ghost 6.0 and it was a READ error I got rather than a WRITE error--Ghost could not read the NTFS partition, therefore, it could not ghost it. This is one good reason to avoid NTFS unless you absolutely need it.

Another suggestion would be to ghost it to a bootable CD. We use them all the time here. Of course you'd need a CD writer installed. But who doesn't anymore? I don't think 6.0 supports it, but we use 6.51 anyway.

I do this (sucessfully) all the time with Powerquests' Drive Image 4.0. I run it off the boot-disks and it always works fine for me. I only use NTFS.

I concur with Ralf, I've nver had a problem with NTFS partitions using Drive Image 4 either.
