SCANDISK Problem On DUALBOOT 98-2K - HELP!

Hello again, i never expected this problem,

having no problems in 2000 but when i run Scandisk in Win98 on Drive D (Drive D carries Win2000 install) it gives me errors and asks me if i wanna fix...i say NO b'cuz i think it might screw up the Win2000 install.....

Is this normal b'cuz of file incompatabilities or something? All drives are FAT32!

if this is normal and i have to do a HARD SHUTDOWN in Win98, then when it runs scandisk at boot i think it will mess up Win2000, am i right?

Should i always boot to Win2000 after Hard shutdown and run scandisk from there?

also should i disable AutoRunning scandisk at boot (just incase)

When i done this HARDSHUTDOWN i booted to Win2000 straight after and it did not have its own Auto Scandisk boot, could it be disabled or does it not have that feature?

whats the procedure if i done a HARD SHUTDOWN in Win2000, would scandisk run then or would i have to do it manually, is that the way it works?

any ideas on this matter? as i havent had Win2000 to long and am still learning and overcoming all these obsticals.

.....or perhaps there is a way of tweaking the Win98 automatically Run Scandisk (after HardShutdown) so that it runs as normal on all Drives except Win2000 (Drive D)....i think this may solve the prob....

.....or maybe a quick thought: copy the Win2000 Scandisk over to Win98, just throwing a few ideas in to get your thoughts going.

...but i need your advice first so i know wether this is nessesary or maybe there is a better way.

    TIA

You have to run a scandisk on Win2000 before it boots. In win2000 click on my computer/ right click on D:\ "win2000 drive" choose properties\ choose tools\ choose error checking\ check both boxes there and click start. It will tell you that it will run at next boot. click yes and reboot.

i tried that and that worked cool, and i've also had several software related HardShutdowns in Win2000 now and i realise that it run scandisk automatically, but that still leaves me with the problem of the Win98 autorun scandisk, what if it fixes (screws-up) my win2000 partition in the process.

i dont wanna (althought i have) disable win98 scandisk really as i have to then Run it manually on 10 partitions when/if it boots....i cant use switch to make it run on all drives b'cuz of win2000 partition.

How do i get aruond this?

I wanna know what to do after Win98 BadShutdown?

W98 Scandisk should not hurt anything on any of your FAT32 partitions regardless of which operating system is installed on them. However, if you want to keep W98 Scandisk from running on your W2K partition, you might want to convert your W2k partition to NTFS to make it invisible to W98. Of course, this means you will not be able to access anything on the W2K partition from W98, so don't do this if you need access. But this would keep W98 sd from running on the other partition.

Hi & ThX, I will concider NTFS as i dont really need access to Win2000 partition from Win98, but i dont think i really need the advantages of NTFS tho...i'll have to look into it...

....but at the moment, would u say that when 98 S-Disk finds errors on my Win2000 Partition (as it does every time, even within win98) that i should just allow it to fix it...then maybe it wont find any other errors next time it runs....but i'm afraid if i allow it to fix that it will screew up Win2000 install.

    ---------------------------
Mine does find errors on My Win2000 Partition....Heres the error message:

The 'D:\WINNT' folder contains incorrect information about the file or folder whose MS-DOS name is 'C4C4~1'.

The file or folders long name is either stored incorrectly on your disk or it isincorrectly associated with 'C4C4~1' Scandisk repairs the error by storing the name in the correct format or by deleting the long name, you will still be able to access the file or folder by using the name 'C4C4~1'.

    1. Repair the error
    2. Delete the affected file
    3. Ignore this error and continue (i select this 1)
    -----------------------------------------

Any1 really know what that mean and wether i should allow it to fix it?

    Regards
