    W95 does not start - gdi.exe failure code 0000

My Windows95 always stops booting with the screen "It´s now save to turn off the computer" shorten before there´s a message kind of "failure while loading gdi.exe - please reinstall Windows"
The bootlog.txt says that gdi.exe stops with failure code 0000. What means that and how can I repair my W95 ? (Computer only starts in prompt-mode)

what kind of puter & what version of 95?
when did this start occuring? What was the last thing istalled?
Also, see if it works in safe mode. When the starting windows 95 prompt appears press F8 immediately & chose SAFE MODE from the menu
it will be slow & look funky but see if it loads then
if so, it may give us other things to look at.
    Formerly known as Eyesee, see?
    Everything works,in theory

    I´m using win95b and have an AMD K6 PR233 with 40Megs Ram
I had nothing installed before, it started with the problem that the screenres was at 640x480 and I switched it to 800x600 with 256 colors. (I´ve got a 17" monitor so that shouldn´t be the problem. It doesn´t matter if I choose the SAFE MODE (I already done it), it always stops with "It´s now safe to turn off your computer".

Hi.. check your email, I sent you a copy of the gdi.exe, perhaps it's corrupt, click on the paper clip from the email and save to a diskette (if you can't access mail on your machine) then rename your old gdi.exe to gdi.bak then copy the file to c:\windows\system directory.

You may need to get the proper drivers to run your monitor at the new resolution, too. mach

Hi Debby...just in case you need the DOS commands:

    At C:\> type cd windows\system <Enter>

    At C:\Windows\System> type ren gdi.exe gdi.bak <Enter>

    Then type A: <Enter>

And finally at the A:\> prompt type copy gdi.exe C:\Windows\System <Enter>

Hope it works. Good luck. Ed

Hey thanks 4 ur help. I liked it very much. Actually I overinstalled Win95 and the problems were gone. If anyone has got a win98 version 4 free - just tell me - I´m worse of win95.
At least some words to all who answered to me: I know computers since I was a child - so I really had done a lot of tricks to correct the failure in win95. So what I really had missed was a very profi-like answer. No missunderstanding, I´m happy of getting so much answers but there was no tip which was really usefull.
