Networking
hi,
i have two PC's connected together using a LinkSYS 10/100 Networking kit. PC1 is running NT4 and PC2 is running Win98.
i believe the problem is with PC1, because when NT loads it gives me an error window which says"
"At least one service or driver failed druing system startup. Use event viewer to examine the event log for details."
s so i checked the event viewer and clicked on the service/driver that failed. And this was the description:
"The Linksys LNE100TX Adapter Driver service failed to start due to the following error:
A device attached to the system is not functioning. "
Now.. how do i find out which device is not working???
Well i've just installed a SCSI adaptor and a Yamaha CD-RW. Which is working fine now .. thanx to u guys.
At first i thought it was one of those that might be giving me a problem.. so i've re-installed SP5, which didn't do anything.
please help.

Your network card is not working properly which can be a result of bad drivers or a IRQ or other resource conflict.
NT System Diagnostics under Admin Tools should give you some useful information
See if you can change any of the properties of the network card (either in NT or the PC BIOS). Force the connection type (10BaseT, etc.) You may also have to change the slot.
Make sure you are using the latest drivers.

I agree with Mulder.
Unfortunately, NT is not plug and play. This means that you have to manually setup the devices you are using. However, you can find out quite easily what is being used (as is mentioned) by way of IRQs and then choose one that is free (like IRQ 10 or 12, etc).
When you get your machine to recognise the network card make sure that both of your machines are running the same protocol. I think it is best if you avoid TCP/IP for the time being and use, instead, NETBeui. This is normally a safe bet when first starting.
Good luck.

At first i did get both PC's to recognize each other and was able to transfer files to one another using the TCP/IP protocol. But that was before i installed my Adaptec SCSI card and burner.
I've tried changing the PCI slots of my network card (three different ones), but that didn't work. Now how would i find out which IRQs are free and which one it's currently set to??
When i open up NT diagnostics, then Resources, this is what i see:
01 i8042prt isa
02 serial isa
03 serial isa
04 serial isa
06 Floppy isa
09 eez3m pci
10 EMU10K1 pci
11 aic78u2 pci
11 HPT366 pci
11 HPT366 pci
12 i8042prt isa
15 atapi isa

Have a look on your Win98 machine and see what IRQ and I/O settings that NIC is using. As this is a network kit, the chances are that both cards are configured to use exactly the same settings.
You may have to check your BIOS and make sure that it registers a NON plug'n'play OS. You may also have to boot to DOS to change the settings of the NIC if the CD drive is interfering and you can't change it from within NT.
