Profiles and logon

Hello everyone !!!!

Can someone please advise me on this - many thanks....

We are currently using Token Ring on 4MB speed - (soon to be 10MB Ethernet), and recently began using NT4.0 as our primary network - (it was NT & Novell).

The problem is with the profiles. The company want Roaming, however, some profiles are in excess of 40-45MB. This makes logging on tedious, sometimes up to 25 minutes!

Now, we have told users that removing wallpapers, and shortcuts etc will help, but is there a more efficient way to do this as many of the PC's belong to the Design dept for example, who use lots of shortcuts and graphic intensive files?

The users PC's all run NT4.0 Workstation (except laptops on Win 95), and run SP5.

Instead of updating to 10MB Ethernet why not use 100MB Ethernet?
I think that the 3COM 309 Ethernet NIC is a dual 10MB and 100MB card.

But due to cost limitations, they are only able to run 10MB around the building.

If the profile are growing to 40 MB then it is more than just wallpaper or shortcuts using that space.

More likely it is large executables or application data that is ending up in the profile directory. For example, Outloook98 bu default puts the offline mail file in the users profile directory.

I would look in the profile directories on the server to see what is using the space then either reconfigure the applications or educate the users to save the file somewhere else. If they need to get to the data files from any PC then they should be on a share on the server rather than in the profile.

Craig is right, the biggest culprit is Outlook and archive files. However, IE can save temporary internet files in your profile too and, although it may not be very large, it can easily be a few thousand files.

It's worth checking that and moving them to a network share.

We do use IE5 here, but not Outlook (except the Express version with IE5).

With regard to moving the Internet files from a profile to a network share - how is this done?

Tools | Internet Options | Temporary Internet Files Settings - click on Move Folder and select an appropriate location.
