virtual memory problems - computer unbearably slow

My NT 4.0 Server recently gave me ther error message" the system is running low on virtual memory. close some applications, and..." etc. So, I go into control panel and double the virtual memory settings... still, after a reboot, my computer is unbearably slow, unusable. Why does this happen? help....

are you running lots of programs on startup? how much memory do you have on your system? first kill those that you have running on startup and limit the amount of applications running at one time, second I'd add more ram-you need 64megs and up. These are only suggestions.

One of the first things that enter my mind is do you have a defrag utility like Diskeeper 3.0. If you have never defragged your computer this could be the problem. Also, if you are running 16 bit apps they are not very good about releasing NT memory. Hope this helps.
