Can a saved document created by Works be run on another computer??

    Hi,
I saved a couple of documents created in Works to a floppy. In case of a computer failure, would these documents be able to be retrieved in another computer that didn't have Works?
    Sincerely, Nancee

You could most likely access it using another Word Processor (like Word/Wordperfect), if that program had the appropriate options installed.

One way to resolve that, given Works has the capability, is to save your documents as RTF files. This is a common standard across WP packages.

    Hi Whitphil!
I did a test and just typed a line and saved it with the .rtf extension. When I opened it, it opened in wordpad. Then I copied one of the documents to my desktop (since the floppy wouldn't take the same named document again) and renamed it with the .rtf I got a bunch of boxes and Y's.
I'll have my daughter put this floppy in a friend's pc and see if it could be printed.
I'm of the impression that the document has to be saved in .rtf immediately. And if that's the case I don't know if wordpad would print it as it was presented in Works.
    Sincerely, Nancee

You can't just rename the saved file, you'll have to open it in Works, choose File - Save As and save it as an .RTF file.

What you're trying to do is to change the format (language) that the file was saved as to one that another program can read/understand. Renaming the file doesn't change the format of the file.

    Cliff makes the point.

As well, on your system RTF files open by default in WordPad. BUT, from Works you should be able to open the same file by browsing to the directory if is stored in, and making sure All File Types (or RTF types) are selected.

Try "Jarte" http://www.jarte.com/ "it's free and nonags!"

My kids love it! no more pains for indents and so easy to get around, much better than wordpad because you can use word templates, too. Their homework got a lot easier without a costly word processor.

However it will take over your rtf extentions if you select it to do same i.e. wordpad docs will open with 'jarte' if double clicked on. Othewise who cares..

    Cliff,
Thanks for explaining why changing the extension of the file didn't work.

    Phil,
I appreciate your information too. When I open the file in My Documents it is opened by wordpad but when I opened it in works --it was opened by Works

Thanks Mach, but I don't need another program, we have Works - I'm just concerned if we had to access the floppy I made.
    Sincerely, Nancee

Duhhh file associations? "need app to open doc created in word.. in case of emergency"? I guess a million or more users and 5 stars are all bad?? lol.

(download it anyway.. no reg hacks, ads or dither or is it either aside from selecting rtf.)
