Are the lastest Windows Updates safe????

Hi,
I went up to Windows updates and it lists two Critical Updates (re security bulletins MS02-008 and MS02-009). The first one refers to files MSXML2.DLL (and 3 and 4). I have MSXML3.DLL(and 3a and 3r).
The other update relates to WSH (I think). Does WSH have to be enabled before installing this update?
AND more importantly, has anyone installed them and are they okay??

As a general rule, M$ is not in the business to destroy peoples computers. I always grab the updates and have never had a problem. Some people on the other hand have.

I've just installed them both today on my Win98fe system.

No probs,,so far.

I do not,however,let windoze install them from the update site. I feel it's better/safer to Dn/load them to a file,then do a shutdown of running apps. and "then" install...

I installed this update recently:

Security Update, February 13, 2002 (MSXML 3.0) - version 1,10,101,0 - was successfully installed.
2:03:18 PM Friday, February 22, 2002 : 5247


I have had no problems so far. I did take the precaution of shutting down or disabling anything that I thought could interfere, such as NAV autoprotect, NAV script blocking, Norton personal firewall, and also I reenabled/reregistered regwizc.dll, and shut down all other unnecessary programs during the download/install.

Everything is working normally so far.

Thanks everyone. I experienced a problem the day after installing that cumulative patch last week - I don't know if it was related or not, but I've got cold feet right now.
Steve, right now Updates shows some Intel hardware thingy - and anyone who has installed it has had major problems.

saw a report about problems with update in dual boot system(s)
(one with mandrake linux, other is hearsay)

the gist of it was something about updating XML...

dud 98se boot was result.
to look into/try resolve issue, they's looking at win system and bootlogfiles trhu linux, them guys.

is my post.I called my friend with the same problem and he confirms that he also did the Windows update ,but hadn't rebooted and didn't notice the problem until the next day and then never realized it might have been the UPDATE that caused it.

I really don't want to install those updates! (part of me does for the security)
I don't have any other OS but the other poster was in a mess and she didn't indicate the dual OS.

I am thankful you mentioned the problems with the intel driver thing. I almost installed it, but decided to hold off. I remembered in the past the udate page saying that my Dell computer needed a Compaq driver, so I was suspicious. I am glad I held off after seeing your post.

You're welcome I also got the Compaq update listed a while back! I have an HP, so I was suspicious too.

I hope you can get those files you need. I did a search for DMAC and I didn't understand any of it. I think the person on your thread was suggesting you put the original files back if you had them. I'm pretty sure I have all of those MSXML files you referred to, so when you did the update the 3, 3a and 3r were probably overwritten (I think).

I gave up trying to solve the prob and just reinstalled Windows,much to my surprise I didn't need to reinstall all my programs .First thing i did was shut down everything In my Taskbar and background and did the Security update again ,this time it worked Odd thing ,this time it prompted me to reboot immediately afterward ,the first time it didn't?

Hi Wonderinguy,
I'm glad you got things fixed and the updates installed well this time. Since it went well this time, I'm wondering if the site itself could have been overloaded and that caused your problem.
Do you happen to know how to download a critical update to the harddrive instead of letting it install automatically? I've never seen that option.

I never saw that particular warning. Did you click on the "more info"? I got a warning once about one of the updates - something to do with a certificate date and it couldn't be verified. I didn't install that update. Maybe if you go back later, or tomorrow you won't get that warning. Reboot your computer before you go back.
