    Windows won't shut down

Twice when I tried to shut windows down it wouldn't respond. On my machine it has to check the A drive before it will shut down.

Both times it didn't check the A drive and
then wouldn't shut down. It didn't make the noise it makes when it checks the A drive.

Also, I recently defragged. I didn't have any program running before I tried shut down except the solitaire game.

What can I do to fix this problem?

Do I have to uninstall and reinstall windows?

And if I do then do I have to back up all my files?

Or is there some other fix for this?

I checked HELP on my computer and it didn't
    list any problem like this.

Thanks for sending these links. But my question is this: if I perform all these tests and windows shuts down ok after all these things then how will I know which one is the problem? I mean, I did a few of these things last night and windows shut down ok.

But if it happens again then how will I know which one was the right fix? In other words, is there any thing a person can do that will produce this answer: Yes! This is definitely your problem?

Please try doing what Steve has suggested, but do each one, one day apart or so.
maybe even a week apart, that way when one does fix the problem you will know all about it

Also why on earth would you play "Solitaire"

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions.

Sorry about splitting the topic thread. I
    didn't mean to do that.

I will try the Help Troubleshooting Wizard and see what happens!
