grey pane in explorer windows
the user is running 98fe and ie4. his cat jumped on the keyboard about five hours ago and ever since then, all explorer windows look similar to this:
the right-click context menu has a "close" option. supposedly there's nothing of relevance in the view menu. dumping the cat on the keyboard again did not produce the desired results. anyone have any ideas? i've seen this issue posted in other forums (the 98 forum at annoyances.org for one), but never saw any answers.

"dumping the cat on the keyboard again did not produce the desired results."
Dang that should have worked! Actually, this looks like a job for superman...err I mean scanreg /restore. Try restoring the registry to the day before the cat mucked it up.
Start your computer and keep pressing the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu (or restart to dos mode). At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command and then press ENTER. At the C: prompt type scanreg /restore and then press ENTER. There's a space between the g and /. Then select a registry dated the day before the problem started and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.

actually, i did suggest 'scanreg /restore' - they're going to try it tomorrow. i'm just curious if there's an easier way to fix it.

Have you tried clicking that X in the top right section, or dragging the frame down to the level of the taskbar.
Try pouring milk on the keyboard, it can sometimes get the cat to fix the problem it caused itself.

hehe
actually, it wasn't my computer, nor was a member of my mob that committed the deed. i haven't been in contact with the person since so i don't know if they have solved the problem or not.
right-clicking and selecting close or clicking the x closes the pane (whatever it is), but upon closing and restarting the browser, it's back - same with windows explorer.

The following often corrects this:
Paste the bold into Notepad:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]
@="Explorer Band"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
Save as Explorer.reg, doubleclick, and answer 'yes' to have it merged into your registry.
Reboot.
Good luck, Tony
