Single pane in Windows Explorer
Seems I remember a thread on this a while back but my search techniques are evidently inadequate. I keep getting a page cannot be displayed after a long search even if I limit myself to 30 days.
I had to do a Scanreg /Restore. The backup was only two days old but it screwed up a few things.
Windows Explorer is only displaying a single pane now – the large right pane. The left pane is grayed out and I’ve been through the settings to try to fix it with no results. If I select something it opens a new window with another full page single pane.
IE does not auto-forward either. When I make a post it will not ever forward back to the thread unless I click the link to do it. Might be why the search isn’t working on the board for me. Went through the advanced settings and everything seems OK.
I wish to be laid to rest where I have so serenely spent my golden years. Bury me in my Crown Victoria in the left lane of US19.

Have a look at what I posted here. Try the MS fix first, if that doesn't work, then try Mosaic1's. This is usually works when the pane is grayed out and the MS fix doesn't.

Rog: Thanks for looking it up for me. Have to go out but I’ll try the fixes when I return.
johnking: The failure to forward has been happening on other boards as well. The search time out might be a VD problem but everything else has been working fine for me on the board.

The MS fix didn’t work. I’ll try the registry hack when I get back. Thanks again.

I did the registry hack and rebooted and it didn’t help either. Still just one pane in Windows Explorer.

Is it possible the "slider bar" is way off to the left? If you move your mouse cursor to the left edge of the screen, do you get the double arrow grabber?
In the other thread the topic starter solved his problem (apparently), by removing the "switches" in the shortcut>properties target address. You might look into that.
I would also run regedit and manually verify that registry entries properly merged and match the ones in the "fix"

I didn't realize it, but it looks like the copy/paste of the emailed regedit4 file didn't reproduce properly when copied here. This is the way it should look (try repeating the process of saving it to Notepad as a .reg file and merging it:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]

I tried the drag first thing. There is only one pane and the normal left pane is gray. I can make the gray panel large or small as if the other part of the tree was still there, but if I try to pull anything in from the left side all I can grab is the side of the explorer window.
I looked at the Windows/tips that IMM mentioned but still have no idea how to get to the switches through a command prompt. The tips didn’t break down the switches either and I don’t see from the thread anything definitive. Don’t want to just delete the switches even if I can find them.
How do you get to Explorer properties that displays the switches? Perhaps someone would have some ideas if I could post them.
My shortcut address is: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.SCF I get the same explorer single pane by accessing it through the Run box with the explorer /e command.

Well if i understand what is being said then just right click on the shortcut and then click on properties and then in the middle of the box that pops up is a white box that allows you to type in the actual address of the actual target. This is where they are talking about. And the symbol for switch if i remember right is /
I really hope that i am not off base with this

That is the standard shortcut, same as mine in Programs. Usually switches are added by the user, either to that shortcut to implement a specific folder view, or to a manually created shortcut for the desktop or quicklaunch bar.
Check out my last post, there may have been a problem with the other .reg file.
You can also manually verify the entries by running regedit and navigating to the CLSID keys (though it may be a bit tedious to do)

Thanks Rog – that did the trick. I should have put the spaces there in the first place – I think Mosaic1 assumed anyone who got it would know how to write a registry patch in notepad.
Do you think someone just copied the correct ones from a good registry or are there people who can write those things from scratch?
Cleansweep monitors registry hacks through notepad and I had it remove the first one for me. It has been a handy feature when I screw them up. Who knows what the first jumbled one did.
FireFighter431: You are right. None of my shortcuts have switches so I presumed they were talking about something else.

MO had to do a little surgery on the registry to reproduce the fault. Then posted the fix which has worked for every instance I've seen on this "gray" overlay. When she sent me the email because the TSG site was down, the email did not copy correctly when I pasted it. I made some manual modifications, but the error on one line escaped me.
Glad to know the fix is still 100%

I’m not sure now that the first one wouldn’t have worked. I copied it to Word to save it and then copied it from Word to Notepad which compressed the line spacing. In any case either the letter you changed or my not screwing up the line spacing worked fine. Thanks again.

Hi slipe, just to clarify -- the only change I made was to the line spacing. The email that MO sent me displayed perfectly in my Yahoo email account. But when copying to Notepad or Vdr the lines all became compressed and I had to sort out the spacing. I missed one and apparently that made a difference. Anyway all credit here goes to Mosaic1 without whom this issue would still be begging a solution.
