    figuring out unknown device

Is there an easy way to figure out what unknown device windows finds and is looking for drivers for at startup? I am redoing a computer for a friend and I have tried all the discs i have that should be there. Modem is installed and the soundcard. Video adapter installed. Motherboard is an A-Open with everything on board but the modem and soundcard. Under system I get the yellow exclamation under unknown devices for the unknown device so that leads nowhere. I have search all fllders on each device disc I have and the majority of the win 98SE disc.
Any out there with experience in this matter?? thanks

    Hey coops are we neighbors?
Are there any device cards in the PC like a NIC card or extra USB card?
Trying to think of what might be there, but not be obvious!

john - could be, maybe i am the disowned son!
There is no NIC or usb cards unless it is built into the motherboard and I can't see it. Only cards are modem and a sound blaster live which has been installed.

IMM - Not sure but will check when I get home. I had to download the driver from the soundblaster site and it installed i thought everything.

If there is a wav device for the voice modem it normally comes with the modem drivers and not the sound card. What order were they installed in (soundcard first or modem first)?
What is the modem make and model (perhaps there is no voice capability)?

I just bring this one up because it seems to show up as an issue with a lot of people.
    (double installed or missed).

Perhaps u should look at device manager (in SAFE mode) to see if there are duplicated devices somewhere?

I had this same problem when I set up a PC for my sister last year. Tried everything I could think of to locate this mystery device. But in the end, I decided that everything was working, so leave it alone. That's what we did, and everything is fine. Never did figure out the mystery device, and it's still there...

modem is an Aopen FM56-PM 56k speakerphone modem. Modem was installed first.
checked under safe mode and nothing was duplicated. Modem works fine no problem connecting or anything. Sound card works fine as well. I could always just leave it uninstalled with a big yellow question mark but I hate leaving things unsolved..

Start > Run and type Msinfo32 in the box.
Anything odd under problem devices etc?

Run ASD.exe and see if anything is listed?

Had similar problems once, turned out to be the on-board soundcard which I forgot to disable in the BIOS, as I wanted to use a SoundBlaster I had.

If you don't have the wave device... in the location described by Johnking.
I have the same modem and had the same problem (I think). It was the Wave Device for Voice Modem. The driver is on the Fax/Modem Suite CD that comes with the modem and the path to the file is
    CDDrive:\Drivers\Windows\FM56-pm\Aop1036w.inf
Just right-click on the .inf file and select install. That should fix you up.

What model of Aopen motherboard is it? And what do you mean by everything on board except sound and modem?
Mine is an Aopen MX3S with onboard video, sound, 10/100 Ethernet, 2 USB ports, PS2/Mouse and Keyboard, printer and com1.
