Internet Explorer won't Access Internet
I have a machine that has lost the ability to access the internet. I can dial up and connect with the modem but Internet Explorer and any other applications cannot access the internet. Almost like they don't know the computer is connected. Drop down to a DOS prompt and you can ping all websites just fine. I had this problem before with another customer machine and the only way I found to fix it was a complete format and reinstall. Just reloading Windows does no good and uninstalling IE doesn't help. Even installed Netscape and no luck. The connection is established but nothing can use it. I figure it must be something with Windows in the registry. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anybody else had this happen?

Cleaned cache (browser)
Defragged

Yep tried all that. I've also had the same occurence with a machine on cable internet. Couldn't go anywhere but could ping everything. It would also connect with a modem and log on just fine and then just sit there and not go anywhere.

Hi Squidward,
I ran into the problem about a month ago and it turned out to be a fix in the wsock32.dll.
cwm just reminded me....there were 3 of them!!

spaceman_333 may be right. Run a "find" for wsock32.dll. It shoud only come up listed one time (and only one time) in your C:\windows\system. If it is listed more than once (anywhere) try renameing (you can always change it back) all but the one in C:\windows\system and see if that works. You can go to microsoft knowledege base do a search and there is an article about this that goes into a more detailed troubleshooting. You might even be able to search this BB and find the link.

Twice, after doing a Norton "find and fix problems" I had the same symtoms. I went back to Norton and undid the fixes and that was it.

may or may not be your problem but I had the same exact thing did everything .....gateway and ISP told me to remove W95 and put it back on or go to W98so I did the W98 thing still had the same problem . my ISP man then told me to rt click my dial up ISP's icon look at server types and have only enable software compression checked in the lower part have only TCP/IP checked......did that and bingo! everything started working again. So basically I removed all my stuff for nothing, but I did upgrade to W98 (if you call that an improvement)

Only one wsock32.dll listed. Even extracted from CD just to experiment. No luck still won't work.

Try restoring your Winsock registry keys:
FIRST back up your registry: Go to Start/Run, type Scanregw, followed by 'enter'. Choose 'yes', when you're offered to back up your registry.
Open Control Panel. Go to the Add and Remove programs/windows setup tab. Take the check mark out of Communication, and click 'apply'. When asked to reboot, say no.
Go to Start/Run, and type Regedit. Drill down to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2. Right click on 'Winsock2', and select 'delete'.
Go back to the Add and Remove programs/windows setup tab, put the check mark back at 'Communication', and click OK again. You'll need your Windows CD-ROM.
